We were right. The next morning Betsy went to get Robert up to get ready for his first Track meet of the season - actually his first track meet ever, and he doesn't feel well.
We make him a french toast breakfast, but he doesn't really eat it. We grab his stuff, give him sudaphed, tylenol and halls and help him to the back seat of the car to go meet the school bus.
The meet is 2 hours and 30 minutes away in Maysville, KY (right on the Ohio boarder). I decide to keep Robert in my car there so he can sleep. For being a 2 1/2 hour drive - it went fast. I must drive too much. One the way I stop of get Robert a pancake breakfast at McDonalds to get him some energy. Luckily, he is feeling a little better.
This is an indoor track - and oh my - it is small. It takes 3 laps to equal one lap on a regular track (400 m). So each boy will be running 6 laps for the 800 m, and Robert will be running 12 laps for the 1600 m.
Robert is running the 4x800 m and the 1600 m. The 4x800 m is the first event of the day. Middle school girls and boys teams are running at the same time. The 4x800 team is Ian Forbes, Robert Lowe, Nick Bierne, and Alex McClarty. Ian runs first - 2:56 when he hads the batton to Robert, Robert makes up ground and passes everyone but the lead runner, hands off to Nick. Nick maintains the 2nd place, Nick hands off to Alex, Alex makes up ground on the first place runner but we finish in 2nd place. Little did we know at the time, but the boys just broke the middle school record. Their time was 10:52.
What is amazing about them breaking the school record is that this isn't even their best 4x800m team. Wait until they run with Logan, Alex, Robert and Nick or Matthew. We have great depth. The other thing that is amazing is that they did it on the first meet of the season, and Robert's first meet ever! WAY TO GO!
Robert's second event was after all the 55 m dash - long wait. Finally they call for it. Again, they run the middle school boys and girls together. Robert gets a great start, he and Nick are running this event along with Nicole Grendi from NOMS. On his second lap (not even a full 400) his shoe comes untied. UGH!! He is staying strong even though he is running with a huge distraction of his shoe's loose fitting. He finishes just behind Nick in 3rd place with a time of 5:52. WAYHOO!! Way to go Robert!!!
