Today was a very busy day. It's Robert's birthday so it started out FANTASTIC. We made a special breakfast for him before heading off to school. I worked all day as a sixth grade LA teacher. Robert had Fire soccer practice for the first time this spring. It started at 4:30 at Fern Creek High School. So as soon as we got home from school we had to jump in the car, pick up Ben for carpool and speed down the highway to get there. Even then we were a bit late. I did some shopping while waiting for the boys, then picked them up at 6:00. I dropped Robert off at home so he could start his homework, then I went back out to pick up pizza. I hadn't even been home but ten minutes all day.
I went to the pizza place not only 5 minutes from our house, but when I came back to the car with our pizzas, the van wouldn't start. UNBELIEVABLE. Not only would it not start, it didn't even make a sound.
Mark came to get me, we ate pizza and then called a tow truck to tow the van to Honda. Mark leaves tomorrow for Dallas, so I will take him to the airport at 4:30 am tomorrow so that I can drive his car while he is gone. This might be the end of the Honda...

Devon is Accepted into BYU - Provo!
Super great news - acutally it's been a super great week!
On Thursday Robert made the rank of Eagle Scout. YAHOO!
Saturday moring Betsy is looking at email while waiting for Robert's track meet to start and sees an email from CES. She wasn't sure what it was, but quickly earned when the first few words were:
"Dear Devon,
Congratulations on being accepted to Bringham Young University's Provo Campus." or something like that.
Oh my goodness. I went crazy. I called Mark right away, but wasn't able to call Devon because we were letting him sleep in since he worked so late the night before. This kills me. I keep waiting and waiting until the time finally says 10:30. Then I call Devon.
"Devon, guess what?"
Devon has no idea - "what." in a monotone voice.
"I have great news - listen to this, ..." then I read the letter to him.
He geniuinly sounded surprised and happy! He's so excited! Now he can go the rest of the day with the good news.
Later that day, at work, he heard Hannah Orr, Steven Saxey and others made it into BYU too!
Congratulations to Devon and the others - what a huge accomplishment!!!!

Robert Runs at Mason County Meet
It's Friday night and Robert falls asleep by 8:30 - something is up - he never goes to sleep that early. These were our thoughts as we found Robert asleep on his bed.
We were right. The next morning Betsy went to get Robert up to get ready for his first Track meet of the season - actually his first track meet ever, and he doesn't feel well.
We make him a french toast breakfast, but he doesn't really eat it. We grab his stuff, give him sudaphed, tylenol and halls and help him to the back seat of the car to go meet the school bus.
The meet is 2 hours and 30 minutes away in Maysville, KY (right on the Ohio boarder). I decide to keep Robert in my car there so he can sleep. For being a 2 1/2 hour drive - it went fast. I must drive too much. One the way I stop of get Robert a pancake breakfast at McDonalds to get him some energy. Luckily, he is feeling a little better.
This is an indoor track - and oh my - it is small. It takes 3 laps to equal one lap on a regular track (400 m). So each boy will be running 6 laps for the 800 m, and Robert will be running 12 laps for the 1600 m.
Robert is running the 4x800 m and the 1600 m. The 4x800 m is the first event of the day. Middle school girls and boys teams are running at the same time. The 4x800 team is Ian Forbes, Robert Lowe, Nick Bierne, and Alex McClarty. Ian runs first - 2:56 when he hads the batton to Robert, Robert makes up ground and passes everyone but the lead runner, hands off to Nick. Nick maintains the 2nd place, Nick hands off to Alex, Alex makes up ground on the first place runner but we finish in 2nd place. Little did we know at the time, but the boys just broke the middle school record. Their time was 10:52.
What is amazing about them breaking the school record is that this isn't even their best 4x800m team. Wait until they run with Logan, Alex, Robert and Nick or Matthew. We have great depth. The other thing that is amazing is that they did it on the first meet of the season, and Robert's first meet ever! WAY TO GO!
Robert's second event was after all the 55 m dash - long wait. Finally they call for it. Again, they run the middle school boys and girls together. Robert gets a great start, he and Nick are running this event along with Nicole Grendi from NOMS. On his second lap (not even a full 400) his shoe comes untied. UGH!! He is staying strong even though he is running with a huge distraction of his shoe's loose fitting. He finishes just behind Nick in 3rd place with a time of 5:52. WAYHOO!! Way to go Robert!!!

Robert Joins the Eagle Rank
Robert has been ready for his Eagle Scout Board of Review since 11/27/12 but there is such a wait when it comes to getting district personal out, that we had to wait until 2/21/13 for his special night.
Weeks went by and finally the day came. Robert dressed in his full uniform, book and Eagle project in hand and headed out the door with his parents.
Each one a bit excited, a bit apprehensive. We had a small glitch just before the night, but it didn't interfere (we needed another 3 copies of his Eagle Project - which we didn't know until 6:30 pm - so Betsy ran to Office Depot and made copies before heading to the church for the Board of Review).
They started the Board of Review at 7:15 (as soon as Betsy arrived) with the leaders at the front, Larrin Vonwhmee, Billy Phenix and the District Eagle Coordinator, then Robert's Scoutmaster, Zane Underwood, Robert and his parents. The District Coordinator explained the procedure - parents will leave the room and Robert will be in a interview style meeting for the next hour. Zane was invited to stay, but not particiapate (I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall, too). It was also explained to Robert that this was his one and only chance for an Ealge Board of Review. I think that made him a bit nervous - I can just imagine him thinking - what if I mess up).
Mark and I left the room. It seemed like forever. Finally about 8:30 they came out and invited us back to the Board of Review room. Brother Vonehmee started off by reading the Eagle Challenge (that was a clue). Then the District Coordinator announced that Robert had made the Rank of Eagle and Congratulated him. Robert's smile said it all. He was so happy! He had done it!
He made the Rank of Eagle Scout before his 14th birthday. He had worked so hard with such dedication and devotion. Sleeping in freezing conditions, earning merit badges, and most importantly learning leadership skills.
Robert - we are so very proud of you and this very BIG accomplishment.

Presenting at the Priesthood Metting
Immediately following Robert's indoor soccer game, he had to get to the Stake Center to assist Mark in a Priesthood Presentation.
His game ended at 4:50, so we got in the van, he changed in the back. Normally I would have driven him straight there, but I had made a promise to get him a chocolate shake. I asked him if he wanted it now or after the meeting. Considering he's been on a campout, played a basketball game (at 11:00) and just finished an indoor soccer game - he wanted it now. He needed it!
We had plenty of time so it wasn't a worry! Robert and Mark then did a presentation at 5:15 for the Brethren of the Priesthood. He later had a 7:00 Priesthood meeting as well. Mark and Robert were gone until 9:30.
Since Devon had to work at 4:00 and Robert and Mark are at the Priesthood meeting, I took Marissa to see "Save Haven." We really liked it! (Mark had taken me to see if for Valentine's Day).

Awesome Indoor Soccer
Today, on the way to Robert's game I asked him to set some goals for himself. As we talked he decided he wanted to try to score two (2) goals and have one (1) assist and play good soccer. Sounded good to me!
We thought we were running late because we had to get all of his Priesthood meeting clothing in the car and all of his soccer gear, but we were the first to arrive for the team. Robert warmed up as everyone else arrived.
The game started at 4:00 pm. Robert was the first to score a goal. 1-0. Then the Tree Huggers scored. 1-1. The Tree Huggers are the first team we played in this High School League (it's the time Robert's knee was really hurt). Then Nathan scored for us - and Robert scored again! Wow, maybe the campout didn't hurt him physically at all. He's on fire! 3-1 us!!! Against a high school team! YEAH!!! But then the Tree Huggers came right back with 2 goals. By half time the score is 4-4.
The whole game was just like that. We'd score and then they'd score right back. 5-5 … 6-6 … with Robert scoring a third goal and having two assists! Way to go. Robert did a hat trick. Robert goes out of the game, and then the Tree Huggers scored two more to end the game 8-6.
We played excellent! I think we just tired out at the end, but it was a very exciting game and everyone did a great job. We had lots of shots on goalie! Way to go TEAM!!!
We were going to have to pull Robert at 4:45 to make it to a Priesthood meeting by 5:00 but Mark texted me to say Robert didn't need to be there until 5:15. That was awesome because it was a chance for Robert to finish and get that last goal.
I had promised Robert a chocolate shake if he met his goals - well, he exceeded them, so off to McDonald's we went before heading to the Stake Center for his meeting.

Devon & Robert's church basketball game #3
After a long cold night camping Robert & Devon had a basketball game at 11:00 am. Devon didn't go on the campout, but Robert did. Robert actually had to decide between playing for the YMCA team and the church team and chose to play for the church. It was a good decision since his team at the YMCA blew the other team away. 20-2.
Devon takes the jump and Robert usually brings the ball up. We were off to a very poor start 16-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. By the end of the second quarter we were only down by 4 and held them to only 4 points: 20-16. Then in the third quarter we came within 1 point of tying up the game when Robert was pushed to the floor and ran off the court. (which he can't do).
Congratulations boys on a great game.1

After Robert went out, the other team scored 6 points in a row. At the same time Robert went out of the game (he came back in a little later), Devon fouled out. It was a close game but then the other team pulled ahead. It was the most competitive game we've had - in that we were so close to winning. This is especially good considering half the boys were still tired from the "Frost Campout".
Congratulations boys on a great game.1
Marissa's Basketball Game #3
Marissa - point guard |
The game started at 8:00 am. I was so nervous Marissa would get injured by one of the other team's girls. UGH!!! Marissa didn't start because she recommended Lexi to take the jump ball, but she was subbed in quickly after that and played most of the game. Luckily we got off to a great start 2-2. As always the games are very low scoring.
In the second quarter Marissa scored 2 baskets in a row, now we are 6 and they are at 5. We didn't let LaGrange score at all during the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter LaGrange got a shot off due to poor defense, now it is 6-7. Then Lexi scored on one of her free throw 7-7. The game is tie. We take a lot of shots but just couldn't get them to go in. With less that a minute left in the game LaGrange got a shot off past Eden and scored - UGH! Now it's 9-7 their lead, but Mierra is fouled on a shot so she gets two shots with only 1 second left in the game. She takes both, but misses.

Freaky Friday
Friday was just the craziest day. I got called in to sub at Harmony Elementary in the morning so that changed my plans for the day. I found it was a bit of a challenge as the kids constantly talk. She warned me that they were working on being more quiet - clearly they are. I got off work at 3:00, went to Thornton's to get a snack and then over to the middle school to help distribute the Little Caesar Pizza Kits (our PTSA fundraiser). I was also picking up my order and Janelle's (since she is home recovering from foot surgery). When I got there, they had Janelle's order, but not mine. Mine was $143 worth of food - where was it! I was upset, but let it go.
I volunteered to help with the pizza's for two reasons 1) I am the PTSA President so I want to be there to support the fundraiser and it's chairperson, and 2) Robert has soccer try outs until 6:00 so I might as well do service while I wait for him.
Unfortunately, Robert's try outs were postponed until Tuesday of the next week (only 6th & 7th grade tried out today). So there I was at the school with no pizzas to pick up and no son to pick up either.

Getting Trunky as PTSA President
Today was our NOMS PTSA Meeting. I am the president. This is my 5th year as President (4 years severing continuously then a 2 year break). It hasn't been the best year.
On one had it has been wonderful. I have an amazing board for the most part with wonderful women willing and anxious to do their part. For the most part everyone does what is expected which is wonderful.
On the other hand, there are some people that are hard to work with, don't want to follow the council of the president or follow the guidelines. That is difficult for me, but then I remember I only have 3 more months and I will no longer be at NOMS.
I will be sad to leave these halls. NOMS has been a great school for my children. I have dearly loved being a part of the activities at the school. One of the best parts of being on the PTSA is getting to know the kids and some of the parents. I am very grateful I was able to volunteer in this way over the past 9 years.

Passing of my Mom
Today marks the 22 anniversary of the passing of my mom. It's always such a wierd day for me. I miss my mother and I loved her very much, but I always longed for the loving mom that was there for me, and she wasn't. When she left me when I was only 14 years old, it tore a huge hole in my heart. From that time on it was like she wasn't a part of my life because she was so far away. Even through we wrote letters back and forth (see other blog) I still long to feel closer to her than I do in reality. I guess it is because she was gone for so long during such an important time in my life.
Twenty two years ago today she left this earth. I am very grateful she is in a perfect place with no pain or suffering. She had to endure so much on this earth - more than one should. She lost her family; that is torture enough.
I wish my kids had the opportunity to know her. As it is they have lost both their grandmothers.

Sewing Skirts for Jessica
Ever since Jessica received her mission call about two weeks ago, we have been in a "Missionary Preparedness" mode. I made her a checklist and spreadsheet of all the things that she/we need to get done before she leaves for her mission.
Some of the items she needs to take care of: such as her passport photos, paperwork and submission, visa application and submission, etc.
Some of the items I am taking care of: such as sewing her missionary clothing, getting her temple clothing, making her temple dress, arranging her endowment, arranging her pack up plans, etc.
Last week I went to the store and bought fabric for 5 skirts: cream, grey, black, brown and navy with a white swirl.
So far I have finished (with the exception of the hem) the navy with a white swirl, and the cream skirt. I will start the grey one this week.
I have ordered her temple shoes and temple clothes.
Things are progressing nicely.

Back to Back Indoor Soccer Games
As if Robert hadn't already had enough activity, he has two more games - back to back. At 5:00 pm Robert's indoor soccer league has a game. We are playing in a high school league and it really shows that we are smaller! The other teams are bigger, stronger, faster.
Robert had some really great moves! I hope he isn't picking up any bad habbits or styles from playing better, faster competitors. We lost both games, but he had a great time playing with friends.
Tonight was a quiet night at the Lowe house - Marissa was at the Stake Valentine's Dance and Devon was at work. Since it was just Mark, Robert and I and our sink is clogged (makes for poor clean up) we took Robert to Olive Garden after his games for a delicious three course dinner. Robert had chicken parmigina, Mark had ravioli and Betsy had seafood alfredo. YUM! We had a delicious dinner and a fun time together.
We got home around 9:15 and watched "Abel's Field". Marissa came home with Meg around 10:15 and Devon came home from work around 11:05. Once everyone was home we had family prayer and went to bed. Church is now back to 9:00 am (early for a teenager's family).
Robert's YMCA Basketball game #3
Going straight from the airport (getting daddy) we drove out to St. Francis School for Robert's YMCA Basketball game. He plays with Alex McClarty, Matthew Morris, Jack Dugan, Jack Seibert, Mason Rice, Andrew Matts and Ryan Goehagen. This is Ryan's first time at a game.

Bringing the ball up |
The boys wore white; their game started at 11:00 am (it also started a little late). Robert started as the point guard. The other team got off to a quick start leaving our guys scoreless 0-7. Then we started slowing it down and working the ball around to the inside. We made inside baskets and our free throws. We were behind at the first quarter mark but just before half time Robert stole the ball, passed to Mason, Mason passed to Ryan and Ryan shot and made the basket tieing the game 18-18. After that out team held the lead until the last 1:46 of the game. It was a one point game 31-32 them. in that last minute and some both teams had several opportunities to score points and both teams made some and missed some. In the end we won 37-36. It was the closest game of this league that we have played so far. It was also the first game that all 8 players for our team showed up, which was great, but also meant less playing time for everyone. Robert didn't get to play his traditional "hot" 3rd quarter. He was disappointed to not have scored during the game. He had several rebounds (on the inside), steals and assists, but no points. Mason was high scorer this game.

Mark's gone for two more weeks
Mark has been in San Jose, CA since January 28th. He worked for a week, then took a weekend break visiting his father, brothers and sister in St. George, UT. He was also able to arrange for Jessica to come down with his brother, Alan.
What a nice weekend. While he was there he was able to visit with his dad three times. The first time his dad seemed really out of it, but the second time he was much more alert. He even accepted Mark's challenge to play "Mercy" with his big strong "milking cow" hands. They both burst into spontaneous laughter. Mark's brother and sister said that was the first time they've seen him laugh in years. The last visit with his dad Mark went on Sunday and he went on his own, and this one was the most significant. Mark's dad was resting in his room when Mark came in and got him up. He was very congnitive of his surroundings and his feeings. He told Mark he didn't enjoy living there. He knew who he was and who Mark was. He was sad because he feels he can't do anything anymore. He told Mark he was frustrated and depressed with his current circumstances. He was acutely aware of his present condition. At no time in the past four years has Mark's dad been this in-tune with the present. It was a gift for Mark to connect with him.
On Monday Mark was back in San Jose, CA for the following week. He had hoped to come back Friday, but there was just too much work to get done, so he couldn't return until Saturday morning.
It was great to have him back, but the timing made things a bit difficult for Betsy. Robert had a 9:00 am Futsal game at Tom Sawyer … Mark's flight got in at 9:35 … but then Robert had a basketball game at 11:00 out at St. Francis. Things didn't go in our favor - Robert's game started late - so I had to pull him during the 3rd quarter (sorry). We made it to the airport - got Mark and made it to the basketball game in time for warm ups.
It is great to have him back. He was gone so long we had gotten used to him being gone. Devon and Marissa were so shocked (they didn't remember he was coming home) when I brought him home after Robert's game (around 12:30).
