FC Pride Tournament

A run with the ball
Robert and I left school at 3:40 to try to beat all the traffic on the I65 street bridge on our way to Indianapolis for his team to participate in the FC Pride Tournament.  On our way up we stopped to eat dinner.  I treated Robert to the Cheesecake Factory - I have no idea why I did that - it was so expensive (but we really enjoyed our meal), and so delicious!

We arrived at the hotel and settled in for the night because we had to be up and out early for a 8:00 am game.  Robert's team usually arrive at the fields 45 minutes to one hour early.  It was only 37 degrees at 6:30 am.  I took Robert to McDonald's for our traditional pre-morning game breakfast of hot cakes and sausage with chocolate milk.  All I wanted was a hot chocolate, but their machine was not working - ugh.

There was a chilly breeze that bit right through my clothes even with a fleece blanket wrapped around me, but at least the sun was shinning and the boys were not complaining.  I made sure Robert wore his underarmor, hat and gloves.

He didn't start today, but he played 3/4 of the game - about 45-50 minutes.  He had a great game as a defender - many stops!  Near the end of the game Robert had a shot on goal that just was one inch from scoring - the ball hit the post.  In the end our team lost 0-1.

There was only two hours before our next game so we went back to the hotel room to change uniforms, refresh and then get back to the fields.  At least the temperature was in the low 50's by now and the sun was shinning, however the breeze had picked up.  It still seemed very chilly to a fan.  Robert didn't mind at all - he said he didn't even notice the chill while he was playing.

Again, Robert didn't start but he played 3/4 of the game.  He'd go in about 1/2 way through the first half and stay in the rest of the game.  He had another great game even though (as a team) we were out played.  The other team looked like 8th graders/freshman.  They had developed calves and thighs, some stood a whole head above our players.  Robert had some  great saves and stops.  He was involved in several plays.  Unfortunately, the opponent scored on us from the other side of the field (1), and then they capitalized on a miscommunication between our goalie and Big C (2).  We lost 0-2.  We played well, we just don't get the ball into an offensive situation much.  The very last play of the game was us on a corner kid.  Little C kicked the ball, it bobbled and then Robert connected for a perfect header into the goal, however at that very same moment, the ref blew the whistle…the goal didn't count.  Robert was robbed!  The boys were so disappointed to come away with two losses in one day.
