Devon heads HOME (Hilliard, OH) for a CC meet

10/1/10 - Devon's team had a short practice after school on Friday before loading the buses to go to Hilliard, OH (the place Devon was born) for a cross country meet Saturday morning. The team stayed at the Hampton Inn, right on Cemetery Road. I stayed with my best friend, Katie St. John and her family.

10/2 - Saturday I drove the 2.0 miles to the Hilliard Darby High School (the school our kids would have attended had we stayed there. I currently have a 10 mile drive to the kids school, so 2 felt so close). The Varsity team ran at 11:00 am, the JV team ran in the open run at 12:00.

The day had perfect conditions: sunny, not to hot, a gentle breeze. Perfect day and time to run.

Finally I was able to get a nice photo of Devon in his uniform
Getting last minute advice from one of the coaches
Team huddle and chant!!! Very important! They do this with the whole team before every race!

Watching a race is an adrenaline pumping activity. I get so excited seeing the racers take off after the gun fires. This course was set up so that you could practically see the entire race as you moved from one spot to another and back, because the runners ran in a "8" formation around two huge fields.

Devon trapped in a cluster with 3/4 of the race behind him.

Devon had an amazing race! He finished a 5K in 18:16. He also collapsed at the end of the race. He did this once before but it was due to asthma. This time it was due to the fact that he didn't eat the "pasta dinner" from the night before and only had a small breakfast. (I felt bad - I should have been with him. I wish I had known he needed dinner - I would have taken something to him.)

I still can't believe that Devon is racing. He used to hate to run and here he is running faster than I could ever dream of running. I am so proud of him!
