It was a LONG day for Marissa. She left home at 7:30 am catching the NOHS bus to go to Bardstown for the Class of the Classes Meet.
The other crazy part of this meet was the HEAT. This week we went from 50 degrees to 79 degrees. Marissa was not used to running in that heat and unfortunately didn't prepare properly. She needed to be drinking water throughout the day and stretching and keeping loose since she wouldn't be running until around 1:30.
Betsy arrived at the race around 12:30. She told Marissa to drink and make sure she had sunscreen on (she said she did). As it got closer to the race Betsy told Marissa to wet her head and neck, but she chose not to do as her mom said.
Then they had 1st call, 2nd call, last call for the 3200 m. Marissa was ranked to finish 3rd in the race but from the very start of the race you could see she wasn't running her normal race. Her first lap was slower and she was behind Avery Fryman. Each lap she added 2 seconds to her time. Even so she finished in 6th place with a time of 12:44.
The second she finished you could see that she wasn't feeling well. She had her eyes shut and wasn't steady. Luckily our tent was right by the finish line and she collapsed as soon as she got to the tent. All she wanted was water. Jesse was so nice and gave me a water to give to her. She came around after about 5 minutes. It was so hard for Betsy. She hates it went things are preventable, and who knows - it was the first HOT meet of the season - especially after such a cold training season.
Well, bad news travels in pairs - Marissa said her feet felt like they were on fire while she was running so she took off her spikes to see if there was trouble, and sure enough, she had blisters in the most unusual spots. She has blisters on the tips of her toes and where the big toe meets the rest of the foot. Betsy believes that is from wearing spikes that are too small - think about it for a few minutes - you'll agree.
Poor Marissa - she not only had to run unprepared in the heat but in spikes that are too small and now has blisters on her feet! UGH!!!! We have to get this fixed soon!!!!
