Our day started at in Kensington, MD at the Washington DC Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although both the kids had been there, only Marissa remembered being there (and very little about the trip). It was great to be back where Mark and I were married nearly 19 years ago. We toured the gardens and the temple grounds. Beautiful!
The Washington DC Temple: still one of my favorite sights in all the world

Second stop on the tour was up the George Washington Parkway to Arlington National Cemetery. Since being there in May with Devon, I thought it would be a great experience for Robert and Marissa as well. At first it was just another touring site, but then the kids found tombstones with the same birth dates as people in our family...interesting...

While in DC you have to see the Mall. I took the kids up one side and down the other, stopping for a brief time to admire the Capital Building.

One of Betsy's favorite buildings in DC is the Lincoln Monument ... because that is where Mark gave her a very special present before they were engaged. She loves to see this building from the back side.
Another "must see" in DC is the White House. Mommy had to drive around for a while to find good parking to see this building properly - it was worth it. Marissa and Robert found Michelle Obama's garden, bee-hive, and so much more.

Betsy has always wanted to paddle boat in the Tidal Basin but never had the chance, so while in town with Robert and Marissa, she decided it was worth it to take them out on a paddle boat ride. We had such a wonderful time. This was my first time seeing the Jefferson Monument from this angle. Magnificent.
Marissa and Mommy steering and pedaling away. Peddling the boat was hard work - especially going against the wind.
Robert and Mommy pedaling and steering the boat. Robert loved being in change of the direction and speed. He may be small but he has a lot of power in those legs.
Betsy loved the view of all the monuments: Arlington Cemetery, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln - all visible on our boating expedition
