Robert Runs in JV Regionals - NEW PR

It's a nice day for a race, but the race is scheduled for exactly 1 hour after school gets out, so that's not much time for the Oldham County teams to get ready (Jefferson County schools get out earlier).  Betsy picks Robert up from school at 3:50 pm and drives Robert to Seneca Park, Louisville, KY.  We arriver around 4:20 giving Robert about 25 minutes before the start of the race to stretch and warm up.

At 4:45 PM the race starts - it's a fast course only one long hill - long on the way down and long on the way up.

Robert starts on the back row behind his teammates so he gets a good start considering where he is, but he gets stuck behind other runners.  The runners head straight out south make a turn like around a track and another turn so that they are heading north on the other side of the narrow park - I don't even know how far into the race it is but Robert looks great - strong - and flying.  He is in good position.

You can't even see Robert, except for his legs behind Adam
The runners disappear down the hill, and then after waiting a while they reappear …. the first two are St. X, then Trinity … etc.  The first North runner is David Gardiner (BANGS), then Areseny, then Aaron Kay Anthony, Adam Zimmerman, then Will Gillette, then Nick Bierne, Zeke Gillette and Robert.  Robert had passed Luc Brezeau, Mark Sherer, Will Strench, and had always been in front of Austin Gordan (Gordy).  WOW!  He's flying.

The runner pass us and head back around the two turns before returning past the start to the finish…Arseny had passed Bangs to take 1st for North, 6th overall.  Robert looked strong back at the other point but could he keep it up - he does!  Right at the finish a Trinity runner passes Robert, but Robert sprints to pass him back.
A Trinity runner passes Robert … but not for long
Robert Sprinting
Go Robert Go!!
Robert passes him before the finish!
Way to go Robert!

He's even closing in on Zeke.  Robert came in 8th for his tema, 36th place overall with a FANTASTIC time of 17:45 - A NEW PR!!!!  Robert took another 50 seconds off his PR and that was just 3 days ago!  WOW!

Wow, that even beats Devon's PR on this same course of 17:52.

Week 25

Helloooo :)

So sorry I don’t have time to write my usual letter to everyone but i just wanted to write to you and dad! I miss you all so much and I hope you enjoyed fall break! Dad sorry you had to work so much :p Mom I hope you are relaxing and not killing yourself with too much work, haha. So I’m doing good here and I love my companion Sister Lariosa! we are like best friends- she and I love working hard everyday and always try to have  a positive attitude. So, I have some favors to ask of youuuuuuu :)
1.   Can you send some good fun, simple FHE games or activities I can do here with our investigators and their kids?
2.  I need new brown and black crocks (the keds style - I think it was) bc I left them outside and they shrunk in the sun, haha.
3.  Send me Devon’s email and address at BYU please bc I want to talk to him
4.  Will you send me lots of pictures?
5.   Keep being the awesome amazing parents you are :)  I LOVE YOUUUUUU :)

You all are amazing examples to me and I love you so much. This week we had transfers but I stayed here in hermosa with Sis lariosa to finish her training. This week we had a lot of rejection and it was kind of discouraging. Dad, in your email to me, you talked about how in Thailand; they all treated you like a movie star but wouldn’t listen to your message- thats how it is here. (ps: dad will you please send me more stories or stuff about your mission? it really helps me and I realized I don’t know that much about your mission.) EVERYONE and their dog wants to be my friend and take pictures with me and entertain me at their house but they don’t want our message (at least this week it seemed like) but I know it will get better and if I do my best the lord will bless me. Man, missionary work is HARD but its great and it’s worth it. The last appointment we had this week, when we were a little down from so much rejection, was the biggest blessing from the Lord. we extended a baptismal goal date for them in Nov. and they accepted and came to church the next day. The Lord really does look out for us.

I love you SO SO much like you don’t even know but, I am happy and doing great here in the Lords vineyard. keep encouraging the ward to do missionary work! Mom, I’m so happy to hear you are working with the missionaries! I wish I had before, and I have made a promise to myself that when I go home I will work with them a lot bc they need the help of the members. us missionaries can’t do it by ourselves. I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVEEEEEE YOUUUUUUU and cant wait to hear from you next week!

love always,
jessica

ps: I have a question for you two. Do you want to come pick me up from my mission and have me take you around to all my areas? They allow this for the foreigners its called a mission tour and I thought it sounded super fun and I would really love for you all to see the Philippines! Just let me know because believe it or not that day is going to come faster than we all think and getting a Visa and stuff takes time and planning. If it’s too expensive or you want to wait a couple years to come back here with me thats totally fine I thought I would just ask :)
love you!

Marvelous Day at the Metro Meet

The weather was cold, but still a great day for a meet!  It's a very exciting day for the Lowe family.

1)  It's Marissa's first meet since her injury (5 weeks)
2)  It's Robert's last meet of the season

The girls are so close - they always huddle up together before a race - they have a great cheer.  I recorded it, but can't seem to get it to stay here.  The girl's Varsity race started right at 1:00 pm.

Marissa was off to a great start.  She didn't get the usual "right up front" start, but she was still way up front.  By the first mile she was 4th in the race!  GO MARISSA!!!  This is so incredible since she is just coming off her injury.
Marissa at the 1 mile mark

Every time we saw Marissa she looked strong, confident and ready for this race.  She has grown so much as a runner.

At the two mile mark two Manual runners and a Presentation Runner pass her, but just barely - she is right with them.
At the 2 mile mark

Marissa gaining on them

Then the runners disappear for the last mile until the finish.  Marissa came around the corner sprinting ahead of the 2 Manual runners.  She finished so strong!  We were so excited to see her finish in 6th place with a time of 21:12.  This is one second faster than her first race of the year on this same course (21:13).
Sprinting to the finish

Everyone was so EXCITED for Marissa!  She did better than expect (not that there were any expectations after her FEMUR injury!).  We were all just so happy that she did well, felt great and didn't have any pain.  She said she was sore, but her breathing was great.  I'm so happy.  She and I worked out every day (except Sunday) at the YMCA to help keep her heart rate at 170 and over come the atrophy from being on crutches.
Marissa with her coaches Sykora and Jerry

An extra special treat was that Coach Teresa and Greg Philips were at the race!  Marissa is very close with both of them.  Coach Philips gave Marissa a super big hug!  HE was hoping she'd run under 22 and she did, by a long shot.  They were so excited and happy for her.

Hugs with coach Philips

The Philips are like family, Marissa with Teresa and Greg Philips

After Marissa's race, the Boys Varsity race started at 1:45.  Robert ran in this race.  He got a great start but was on the second line so he had to work hard to get in a good position.  We were racing against St. X and Covington Catholic - two great Catholic teams.

Robert at the 1 mile
Robert is set on a good pace.  He is catching up to some runners on his team - Will Strench is in front of him.   Several teammates didn't run (David Glenn, Richardo Landis, Jan Isenhart, Nathan).

Rounding the corner

Robert at the 2 mile mark
The runners disappear after the 2 mile mark until they come down the home stretch for the finish.  It was so exciting to see Robert coming - he finished with a new PR (personal record) of 18:36.  That is approximately a 50 second improvement from previous races.  AWESOME!!!
Robert sprinting to the finish

Go ROBERT!!!
The girl's team took 2nd place (without most of our Varsity runners) and the boys team took 3rd place (without all of their varsity runners).

After the meet, Marissa went to Cheddar's with her teammates and coaches, while we treated Robert to lunch at Moe's Mexican.  Everyone had a great day!!!

Marissa is Allowed to Run

Wednesday morning was filled with much anticipation for Marissa and myself as we drove to her doctor appointment.

When we arrived we (I) realized we were 15 minutes late... ugh - how did  I do that.  Thank goodness it was over break and we could just wait.

Dr. Grossfeld saw us, gave her a thorough exam and allowed Marissa to start running!  We were so excited!!!!

We hope all the cross training we have been doing has been what she needs to be able to start up again.  Only time and races will tell.  Her first race will be this Saturday at the Metro Meet of Champions.  She has never run this race (although she has run the Tiger which is the same course) because it is when Varsity it taking a break getting ready for regionals and state.

Natural Bridge over Fall Break

On Tuesday, October 22, 2013 Mark took the day off so that we could have some family fun while the kids are on Fall Break.  Since both Marissa and Robert are involved in Fall sports we can't seem to ever go away for Fall Break, but we do try to get away for the day - here and there.  We've gone to Nashville, Cincinnati and then last year we did Colonel Butler Park and this year we went to the Natural Bridge in Slade, KY.  We called and had Seth Orr go with us.  He and Robert (and Devon) have been friends for 10 years.

Beautiful Marissa
We thought we were taking a .75 (3/4 mile hike) but somehow we ended up on the wrong trail and it ended up being 1.25 miles.  No worries = we had fun, and we climbed a lot LOT of stairs.
Adventurous Robert

Overall, we hike 3.5 miles - we had a great time.  It was the best weather of the week.  I'm so grateful we went that day and enjoyed some time as a family.  It was sad to realize our family is getting smaller and smaller, now with Jessica on her mission and Devon at BYU.  It will only continue to get smaller. hummm.

Week 24 - General Conference

Hey everyone!!

So it's been another great week here in Hermosa! A lot happened this week here in the Philippines so there's lots to tell this week. So one, there was a huge earthquake in Cebu which everyone was talking about because a lot of people here have relatives and friends over there. A lot of people died or were hurt which was really sad but we did hear that all the missionaries over there are safe which is good :)
exchanges with Sister Smith

Next we had exchanges earlier this week so I was companions with Sister Smith for a day which was really fun because she is a new american missionary so with 2 white Americans walking around (and unfortunately no one could work with us that day) we attracted a lot of attention from the Filipinos in our area haha. One of my favorite things to do here is listen to people around me talk about me in tagalog because they don't think I can understand them and then talk to them in tagalog. haha. its so funny they always are super surprised and don't know what to say back, haha.

Not to brag or anything, haha, but this week was kind of a record for me in the number of proposals I received and the number of people who told me I am their crush, haha. Seriously, if you ever need a self esteem booster I'm telling you, you gotta come to the Philippines. It's pretty hilarious :)
Darcy and Clark’s baptism!

Anyways, even though all that stuff is great and all my very favorite part of this week was being able to listen to General Conference and hear from our Prophet Thomas S. Monson. Seriously, General Conference was just so amazing and the spirit and peace I felt while listening to the speakers words was just incredible. One of my favorite talks from this conference was by Kevin S. Hamilton about enduring to the end. He told a story from his youth when he was a basketball player in high school and had to get in shape for the season. His coach made them train and condition to the point where he literally thought "this is it I am going to die" He ran to the point of exhaustion and lifted weights he didn't think he could bear. BUT he never gave up. He endured. He pushed through and had hope that one day he would rest from his afflictions. For most of you who know me, I also played basketball in high school as well as track and field. I remember my own experiences during conditioning for basketball or track and i'm pretty sure the same thoughts came to my head- "i think i literally going to die right now. someone please tell my family I love them" haha. In fact, one time at the end of my freshman year, I even told my coach I was thinking of quitting. But I didn't. I endured. Even when it was hard and I felt like giving up (or throwing up haha) I thought about my team and what I wanted to be, what I wanted to accomplish. If I gave up I would gain nothing from my experience and I would stay weak and out of shape. So I pressed on and endured 4 years of intense practices and training. But by the end of it all I was proud of what I had become. I was (what I consider) to be a pretty decent basketball player and runner, strong, and most importantly happy to say that I was not a quitter. Sometimes in this life we face intense trials and afflictions. We are brought down by the pains and problems of the world and others around us who would prefer to drag us down. Sometimes people question"why do bad things happen to good people? or why am I facing this hardship in my life?" "Has God abandoned me?".  I can promise you he has not. Our purpose in coming to this earth is to be challenged. To learn, to grow, to gain experience so that we can reach our full potential and return to our loving heavenly father after this life. If we never had trials we would never grow or learn how to overcome them.
Elder Orson F. Whitney so beautifully said: “No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. It ministers to our education, to the development of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and humility. All that we suffer and all that we endure, especially when we endure it patiently, builds up our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable, more worthy to be called the children of God … and it is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation, that we gain the education that we come here to acquire and which will make us more like our Father and Mother in heaven.”

Throughout our mortal existence we are bound to find ourselves in situations or areas of our life where we feel like our burdens are to hard to bear and we cannot continue. We must remember in times like these that we are never alone and we do not have to cary our burdens alone. Our savior Jesus Christ atoned for us and will willingly carry us if we let him in. If we have faith, patience, and endure our trails well, God will surely bless us and we will become stronger than we ever thought possible. I was once a weak, uncoordinated and out of shape freshman in high school (trust me just ask coach martin she knows haha :) ) but because I endured, worked hard every day,  and trusted in my god that he would help me, I was able to be proud of the person and player I was at the end of my senior year and see how much I had grown, learned and been strengthened.

I will always be grateful for the lessons I've learned from my trials and hard times because they have made me the person I am today. And of course, I couldn't have done it without the amazing support I had from my amazing parents, coaches (Thanks Martin, Grimm, and Pfaff :) ) team, and friends. We have the best supporter we could ever ask for as we go through hard times- Our Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ :)

me and my besties Sister Garrett and Sister Mack after conference!
I am so grateful for the gospel and the knowledge and strength it gives me to do hard things and to be happy :) I love being a missionary here in the philippines and i love all of you!!!
mahal ko kayo!

Miserable Meet - Robert Runs in the Lexington Catholic

Robert had to catch the bus at 6:30 am - UGH!  This meant we had to get up at 5:55 am to make him breakfast and get him ready.  The weather is suspected of being cold and wet so he is going with many layers ...

Under Armor, Uniform top, Shirt, Sweat Shirt, and Rain jacket on the top...
Under Armor, Uniform bottoms, shorts, athletic pants
two pairs of extra socks

Marissa had to catch the bus at 7:30 am - UGH!  Mark took two trips out to the school in one hour, but this meant we didn't have to go back out there to get Marissa's car.  Marissa wasn't running today since she is still not cleared to run yet, but hopefully next week she will be able to run.

The Varsity boys race is at 9:30, and girls at 10:30.  JV boys is at 12:00 and girls at 12:30.  Robert is running in the JV race.  Unfortunately, at 9:00 am it started raining in Louisville - the rain headed due EAST...  By 10:00 am it was raining in Lexington.  At 12:00 pm it was pouring as you can see in the photos.

Robert got a decent start - he was right behind Luc Brazeau.

Robert is right behind Luc (look over Luc's left shoulder)
I couldn't believe the horrible conditions the athletes had to run in...it was cold, wet and miserable!!!  The ground was muddy and slippery.  Several runners went down on the first turn into the other side of the field.  Luckily Robert stayed up and splashed on...

Robert made it around the tight turn!
The course is a very touch course - it is the state course.  Most runners add time on this course because it is tough!

climbing up the hill
At the 4 K mark
Coming in for the finish!  GO ROBERT!!
Robert did great.  He kept close to Luc the whole race - at some points I thought he would pass him, but then Luc would sprint up just a bit to keep Robert at a distance.  Robert finished in 32nd place with a time of 19:28 - super great!!!

Karl Finds a Permanent Home

Today after school Karl is supposed to go to Mr. Atchison's, a teacher at NOHS for the fall break.  Mr. Atchison is Karl's Graphic Arts teacher.  Mr. Atchison has been interested in hosting Karl permanently but he lives outside the county which means Karl would have to pay the "Out of District" fee (nearly $3000).  That is just way too much money for Karl's family or the Atchison family to come up with, so he has been staying with us until he can find a permanent home.

With Marissa's health issues and Robert's soccer team in the Regional finals we are  not able to go away during this Fall break... so we thought it would be in Karl's best interest to spend the week with Mr. Atchison.  Mr. Atchison was very excited at the idea, and so was Karl.  WIN WIN situation.

Well, After Karl left for school on Thursday, I noticed that he had packed absolutely everything he owned and left it by his door.  So I texted him - he said Cindy told him to pack everything because he probably wouldn't be coming back.  WHAT????  No one told us this.

Karl left home without even saying good bye.  I couldn't believe it.  Not that I didn't expect him to take his gifts back so that he could give them to a permanent family, but he took his gifts back without telling me or allowing me to return them to him.  WOW!

Well, it was inevitable, and expected - I guess just not like this.  So long story short.  Karl will stay with Mr. Atchison for Fall break and after until Christmas break (and hopefully after that).  The CIEE organization found some money to cover tuition for the remaining two months in this calendar year (Nov & Dec).  After that, who knows, but as for us Karl no longer lives here.

Best wishes to Karl.  He was a delightful and very pleasant young man.  We enjoyed having him stay.

Marissa Gets her Braces OFF

Tuesday was a super fantastic morning for Marissa.  Today she - after waiting a few months - gets her braces off.  She's had them on since May of her 8th grade year.  FINALLY!!!

Her appointment was at 8:45 am so that she didn't miss seminary, but could start school missing as little as possible.
She is so happy!

She had to go back at 2:00 pm to be fitted for her retainer.

She's so happy!!!!
