Regional Track meet - Girls take 2nd in the region

Sarah Redel in 2nd place
Tuesday, May 17, 2011 was a chilly 50 degree day with light sprinkles or a mist throughout the entire Regional Track Meet.  It was better to run in the cooler temperatures, but then trying to stay warm and loose in between races became a challenge.

Ally Hall just before she takes the lead
Jessica was smart and brought sweats and blankets to stay warm.  The 4 x 800 Meter is the first event of every track meet.  Our 4 x 800 M team consists of Sarah Redel 1st, Ally Hall 2nd, Hannah Gray 3rd, and Jessica Lowe is the last of the 4 runners.  Here is the progression.  Sarah in 2nd place at the 2nd of 8 laps, Ally Hall shortens the lead and actually overtakes the leader for the 1st place position before the next hand off.
Hannah Gray getting the baton
Hannah runs a great two laps before handing off to Jessica.  She has the team in 2nd place.

Jessica starts out strong and really gives it everything she has but SOHS already has a good head start on us.

Jessica comes in a very close second to SOHS.  SOHS is the past three year State Campions.  We are in such a good position going into state.  These 4 girls just broke their own school record coming in at 10:01.64.  CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 4 x 800 Meter team!!!

Frannie Larson is one of Jessica's best friends.  She is in Discus, Shot Put and High Jump.  Jessica and Frannie used to do HJ together, but then Jessica was moved to distance.  Frannie jumped 5'0" to finish in first place at Regionals.  She is in a good position for State.

Jessica congratulating Lucy Gibson and Erin Didier after running an amazing 4 x 200 Meter race.  They finished 2nd and will be competing.

The next big event for our family is Jessica in the 1600 Meter (1 mile).  She hates to pace herself.  It's so easy for her to take the lead.  You can see in the photo that she has the same stride as the girl in the blue shirt (she usually runs a 5:13).

Jessica is the pace setter for most of the race.  She is very comfortable in this race and does such an outstanding job.  The conditions are miserable and cold so I'm sure they will affect everyone's times.

Here is Jessica looking super strong as she starts the last lap of the race.  The man in the blue said I could either take pictures or cross to the crowd side and yell for her.  I decided to cross over so I could cheer for Jessica.  The girl in the blue (from Collins) passed Jessica in a full sprint in the last 100 meters of the race, but Jessica stayed super strong not to let the SOHS runner pass her.

Jessica finished 2nd in the 1600 Meter with a time of 5:36.  Her coach was very happy.  Jessica was disappointed with her time but very happy to have finished 2nd and to qualify to run at State!  Sarah Redel for our team also had a great finish.  She came in 4th with a time of 5:39 (a new PR for her).

Jessica and Frannie celebrating that they will compete in state!

The last event for Jessica to compete in is the open 800 M.  She hasn't run this most of the season because she's done the mile or 2 mile.  She's anxious to beet the school record of 2:29:27, but that was set under better conditions.

Jessica runs a great race.  She finishes in 3rd place and Ally Hall from NOHS finishes in 4th.  Jessica didn't break the school record but she improved her recorded time from 2:36 to 2:29.55.  She will get to run this at State and prove that she can do it even faster!  Go Jessica and Ally!
North Oldham Lady Mustangs finished the Meet in 2nd place behind Central.  They finished 1st or 2nd in almost every event except the two mile.  I really wish Jessica's coaches could have let her stay with the 2 mile.  I think she would have done great.  She has such a long steady stride!

Next stop:  Kentucky State Meet!
