Bad News

Today started out like every other day, Devon and Marissa went to seminary on time with Devon driving the Corolla, Betsy went to Liberty to continue her long term sub job as a special ed teacher to 15 children, Mark went to work at Flextronics and Robert got himself on the bus to the middle school.

Around 12:30 Mark called me at work with the bad news.  I knew it as soon as he said, "I have some bad news."  I guess, in truth there were a few thoughts that went through my head … someone died (Shauna or his dad), or he lost his job, or he'd been in an accident… it was the middle - he was being laid off at the end of February.  Oh, My Gosh!!!  WOW!  That's a lot to process while on my lunch hour.  The heavy news stayed with me the remainder of the day - what are we going to do without Mark's income.

I've prayed everyday giving gratitude for his job not to ever take it for granted; but I feel (in some small way) that our children take their very comfortable humble lives (and lifestyle) for granted, not fully appreciating what it is like to struggle, suffer, or be without.  I feel that the Lord is trying to show them/teach them the importance of taking care of what you have, and not taking the wonderful blessings - no matter how big or small - for granted.

I hope and pray we will be able to provide for our family as needed and that Mark will be able to find another job.

The Ups and Downs of Basketball

Another weekend means more basketball games and this weekend we spent hours as enthusiastic spectators or prominent players.  Of course, Mom, Dad and Robert are the spectators and Devon and Marissa are the players.

The first game was Marissa's at 9:00 am at the stake center.  They played against a very aggressive and determined Shelbyville team that didn't have much of a defense.  Luckily for us we had a good defense and won the game 24-12 (ish - I can't remember exactly).  All the girls were happy to get a win.  They are now 2-1 in the season.  We had the team picture after the game.

Robert wasn't so excited, but him Mom insisted on going to the basketball game of the team he was going to be on (except for his ACL injury).  We found out from Lana Rice that the game was at 12:00 at Kenwood Station.  She never mentioned that the boys Robert was going to see play weren't going to be in attendance that day.  REALLY!  We showed up looking for them.  The good news was, the team won and there were several other friends of Robert's there and they were all happy to see him.

The third and final game of the day was at 2:00 at the Stake center.  Unfortunately for Devon's team it didn't have the same ending.  Devon and Kaleb played very hard, but it was utterly impossible to get rebounds when the 7'?" post stood under the basket.  We had shots, just not good shots. D Jay had the most points for the team.  The game ended with another blow out, but not nearly as bad as the first game.  The team is 1-2.  Not bad considering...

Great News for Robert

At 4:00 pm today Robert had his doctor appointment with Dr. Bray at Pediatric Orthopedic Specialists.  Everyone was a bit anxious for the news because so much has been bothering Robert (emotionally) about the progress of his knee.

Well, if the title didn't give it away - I don't know what will.  Robert's knee is healing very nicely!  His left knee has the same give and pull as the right knee and both feel in the correct range of motion, etc for a 12 year old boy.

He is now scheduled for an MRI on 2/24 where we will find out for sure what the progress is.

The best news was that he is allowed to run and swim as much as he wants.  He is allowed to increase activity at PT and will continue with PT for the next month.

Oh My Gosh - I was the happiest mom in the world for about 56 hours!!!  So happy that his knee is healing - he can return to some activity and he will (prediction) have a full recovery!  I am so happy!  "It's the Best Day Ever!"  is all that kept coming to my mind (thanks to "Tangled").

Thank you to all the people that have been praying for Robert, for all the PT staff, brace specialists and doctors that have assisted in his progress!

Devon's basketball game

Devon wasn't able to play in church basketball last week because he was scheduled to work, so we were very happy that he could play this Saturday.  His game was at 1:00, which made it impossible for me to be at the game, since I had to go to Lexington to see Marissa run and bring her home.

He played a great game, scoring several points and getting lots of rebounds.  He was sad that his team lost by 1 point.  Final score 24-23.

Marissa runs at Wildcat Classic

sorry it's blurry - that's Marissa
running a 6:07 mile
Marissa decided to run winter track, something that no one in our family has done so far.  She runs three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday) with the team at school and other days at home.

Today was their first indoor track meet at Nutter Field House at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.  She ran the mile.  This was her first time running the mile since 7th grade.  She ran in the 3rd heat, running a 6:07 mile, placing 27th overall.  She was third in her heat!  She did great.

Robert and I went to see her run.  We took Katie home with us and stopped to get Subway on the way home.  Unfortunately, we got stuck in UK basketball traffic (ugh).

Church Basketball

This Saturday was the first weekend of church basketball.  Both the teams for our ward are young, small and inexperienced.

Marissa's team had a game at 8:00 am with only 5 girls showing up to play.  They played a hard game losing 4-14.

Emily Pina, Miarra Phipps, Marissa Lowe, Meg O'Brien, Eden Theiss and Dominique Miller

Devon's team had a game at 2:00, but Devon had to work so he couldn't be there.  They had only 4 boys show up so we let Robert stand on the court and pass the ball here and there.  One time he took a 3 point shot and made it!  They played against the Crestwood 2nd A team.  Everyone on the other team was at least a foot taller than our 5 deacons.  Our boys played hard but lost 9-70.  In my opinion the other team were bad sports.  They tried to run the score up even though they had a 50 point gain.

It was good for Robert to get some activity.  I hope we were okay to let him on the court.

Off for a new year

The new year started off slow and has remained that way.  The kids and Betsy went back to school on January 2.  Mark returned to work as usual, and Jessica left for BYU on January 4.  With Jessica not involved in NOHS Basketball, and Robert's knee not allowing him to be active in soccer or basketball we are for the first time in years experiencing a low activity winter.

Marissa is running for NOHS Winter Track, but that is only 3 days a week practice and I have a car pool with the Walkers.

Robert home sick

Today Robert called me about 20 minutes after I left for work telling me that his stomach really hurt him and that he thought he was going to throw up.  I told him not to eat, but rather to chew on two Tums and go lie down in my beg with a bag and try to sleep as long as possible.  I would check in with him to see how he was feeling as soon as he woke up.

When he woke up he felt much better.

When I got home Robert told me that he was stressed by some kids teasing him at school.  He was very upset, tears welled up in his yes.  Robert actually showed signs of depression.  I was quite worried that there was more to this story than just some friends giving him a hard time (teasing him about liking a girl).  Robert wanted to stay with me all night and even wanted to sleep in our bed.  We let him sleep on the couch in our room.
