On May 9, 2009, I hosted the "Celebration of Motherhood" on behalf of American Mothers, Inc. at the State Capital in Frankfort, KY. It is one of the high lights of the year.
Honoring the participants of the 5th grade essay contest in the
Heather Wiley (Harmony) and Brianna (Locast Grove)
Betsy with Robert (10) and Marissa (12) in the Rotunda
The participants with their "Awesome Moms"
I love volunteering because I am doing something for someone else with no benefit to me - however when it comes to presenting awards to kids, I get a thrill out of it, too.
Today I was honored to showcase the four winners of the AMI 5th Grade Essay contest and their mothers. It was extra special to me because I had coached the winner of the Honorable Mention essay, and the first place essay was written by a boy with Asperger Syndrome that attends Robert's school.
I was so grateful to have my own kids with me on this special weekend that is set aside to honor mothers...Robert and Marissa! They didn't want to go at first, and then I couldn't get them to leave. They had a wonderful time exploring the Capital building. They saw the Senate, and the House, the State Supreme Court and the office of the Governor. It was a great experience for them.
