Search for Melli Simpson

This morning I received an email from a friend at church that simply stated a young women from our ward had gone missing on Thanksgiving morning, and did not return.  The email invited people to assist in the human search for her.

I immediately - like I jumped up and ran downstairs to where Mark was working - ran downstairs to tell Mark, we needed to get dressed and leave within 10 minutes to help search for this sweet young women, Melli Simpson.

We both dressed for the days weather, chilly with a breeze, and wet from the previous rain.  I wore four layers on top, jeans and hiking boots.

Mark and I drove out to the Simpson's/ Sephton's home where we listened to the fire chief's instructions.  We were asked to search Creasey Mahan (in the event that she went in that direction - no one had searched that area, yet).  On the drive over there, I distinctly got the impression that we were going in the wrong direction, but we followed the chief's instructions.

At Creasey Mahan, we talked to everyone we saw, showing her photo and asking if they had seen her.  Mark searched the perimeter of the park, while I walked the inside windy trails in search of her.  We both concluded she was not there, nor had been.  While I was at Creasey Mahan, on a small trail towards the back of the reserve, I knelt down and said a prayer asking the Lord to help guide and direct us to this precious daughter of God.  I pleaded and asked the Lord to help us find her before it got dark.  Upon the end of my prayer, almost during my prayer, I received an answer, that we needed to search Liberty Elementary school and Liberty Lane.  I texted the fire chief asking if anyone had searched there - he did not respond.  Mark and I were on our way there, when we decided to check other landmarks on the way.  We drove through Poplar Woods subdivision and then we combed the woods near St. Francis school on Buckeye Road.  We were there when we received a phone call informing us that a hunter had seen her earlier in the day near route 1694.

WOW!!!! On our way to the Simpson's I had mentioned to Mark, that as we passed over Harrod's Creek, I thought she would travel along there.  I had a super strong impression to stop then and look, but we thought it best to meet with the fire chief - so we drove there.  YIKES - what if we had followed our first impression then...

Mark and I drove over to route 1694 turning into the Harrod's Creek subdivision.  We drove to the very back and hiked along the ridge that overlooked Harrod's Creek and the valley it carved.  Our visibility was only half a mile at best, but we both felt strongly that she had been there.  We returned to the car, then I dropped Mark off at the creek bed - he will walk along the creek bed and I will hike the upper ridge on the other side.  There are horse trails on the other side, and she is an equestrian rider.

While walking the trail I ran into another group that was looking for her, Matt and Jenn Mortenson and their son Ben.  I walked a little faster, so I went ahead - soon Ben caught up to me.  While we were walking, I again asked the Lord to guide and directs us (as a group) to find Melli before the sun set.  I immediately received a revelation!!  I immediately felt that we needed to send a party of volunteers way out to the east and have them walk along the river bed or this horse trail until we flushed her out.  We were not going to catch up to her, by following behind (where we thought she had been).  We kept walking, but texted the idea to the fire chief.  We walked almost all the way to Liberty Lane, when we came across some people on horse back that were searching for Melli too.  They said they had already searched the direction we were headed.  At this point, I was determined to follow the prompting I received.  I told Ben we had to hurry back to the road.

Ben separated from me for a brief moment, he went looking for his dad, but he caught back up to me.  We were walking the trail - and then all the sudden, we did not know where we were.  It's a good thing we are both trained in Boy Scouts.  We knew the river was to the left and the road was perpendicular to the river.  We walked to the right of the river - and somehow a 20 minute walk landed us at the road within 5 minutes.  The Lord took us off the path so that we could arrive at the road in a shorter amount of time.  At that moment Matt (Ben's dad) met us on the road, and I drove them up to their car.

I then drove down route 1694 to find Mark.  By this time, he had walked the river's edge with Sandra (Melli's mother) and returned to the road.  However, my search was in vain.  I could not find Mark.  He soon called and said to meet him at the Simpson's home.  I told him we needed to go to 393 fast.

At the house I comforted Sandra, but felt we needed to leave immediately.  The entire day I was driven at a pace beyond comprehension.  Something was driving me to move, go and strive even harder to find Melli.  Mark and I were on our way out to route 393, but detoured at Liberty Elementary - continuing down Liberty Lane.  She had been spotted there, and I wanted to know a time frame.

However, as we talked to the fire chief - he told us to go home.  He said volunteers were asked to stop searching - WHAT!!!!!??????  Mark and I sorta disobeyed this request.  We decided driving is not against the law and that we would look for her while driving.  I turned on my hazards and slowly we went on.  Route 393 is not that much further down the route 42.  We turn right onto 393... I can feel the gravity of the situation.  She is desperate to find sweet Melli.  With the hazards on, driving 25 miles per hour we are looking near sheds and in wooded areas while driving to our destination where Harrod's creek intersects with Route 393.  These are hilly back roads; as I (I'm driving) comes down the hill with the creek bed in sight, she also sees a red back pack attached to a young lady with Melli's description.  It felt as is my soul jumped out of her body with joy.  I slam on the breaks, hazards are already on, jump out of the car and run.  There she is - she is safe - she is alive - she is okay!!!!!!  Oh my gosh... She is safe, she is alive.

Melli was found by our dear friends the Gilberts.  Abe and Jamie Gilbert do not live far from this spot and decided to go for a walk and look for her at the same time.  They ran into her just minutes before and were walking her up to the road.  I call Sandra immediately and tell her the wonderful news.  The wonderful news that her daughter is found, safe and sound.

The police arrived and tucked Melli in one of their cruisers.  Mark and I followed the police to the police station.  Mark and I wait for Melli to come out of the police station.  We have the opportunity to talk to her.  I run up and wrap my arms around her.

I was able to talk to her, and not as Betsy Lowe (per say) but as an instrument for the Lord.  I was prompted to say, "I know you didn't want to be found, but we are so glad we found you before it got dark.  You have a bright future.  We are so happy you are safe and sound."  When She heard me say, you have a bright future, she looked at me with great interest.  It turned out those were just the words she needed to hear.

Later - the next week - we went to lunch together to share and talk about her experience and the meaning behind what I wanted to get across to her.  We talked about the difference between fate and choices.  Boy, I love this girl.  She has a bright future, if she will just believe.

Week 25: Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Loi Kratong

สุขสันต์วันขอบพระทัยพระเจ้าและสุขสันต์วันลอยกระทง

Hey everyone! This week was Thanksgiving and also Loi Kratong, or a festival they do here in Thailand with floating lanterns. Both holidays focus on giving thanks for what we have in this world. I know I have been given so much and I just feel so blessed and grateful for my wonderful life!

Inviting varied this week! We went all over. One day we went to the park and I talked to a bunch of people. I ended that day by playing basketball with a bunch of คนไทย (Thai people). Another day we went to a university and invited a bunch of students and professors to come to English class and some were even interested in Christianity. I have come to realize that opening my mouth and talking with people about anything is extremely crucial. Sometimes I just write on a whiteboard that we teach English for free and then bring the whiteboard outside next to the street. It's honestly the most effective strategy haha.

For English class this week we taught about Thanksgiving and we continue to have more people come each week! Soon we will have 20 people at class each week which is way better than the 1 person we started with a few weeks ago. After English we taught 2 of our investigators and extended a date. They told us they still needed some time to think about it and search the scriptures which totally makes sense. Anyways we met them again later in the week and they wanted us to read the scriptures with them. They had already read to 1 Nephi 8 and are so close to accepting a date! They have such a desire to learn and follow Jesus so things are looking good. I'll keep you posted for next week!

ลอยกระทง (Loi Kratong) was Thursday, same as Thanksgiving, and everyone celebrates it in Phuket. We taught a couple people that day but at the end of the day we went to the festival with a couple people we teach. It was an amazing experience. Everybody shows their gratitude differently but it was an experience I will never forget! The Thai people make you feel so loved and appreciated in life. I have learned so much about charity by serving my mission in Thailand.

This week we have several new people we are teaching and one is named สมบูรณ์ (sombun). He is really interested in learning and has a lot of potential. We had taught him prayer and the way we pray. Many times after teaching someone, we will ask them if they can pray for us and they say they can't (ไม่เป็น) or that they don't want to (ไม่เอา). However this man just went for it and delivered a wonderful prayer. Such a small wonderful miracle.

Speaking of miracles, we had some on Sunday. On Saturday night I called probably 10 people and my comp called 10 people trying to get everyone to come to church. Not everyone came that told us they would but we still got 6 investigators at church which was sweet. Plus a lot more members came that hadn't come in a long time. It was wonderful and the church was pretty much full. However because so many people came, I had to do translating again for 2 hours of church. I'm actually getting way better and and it has helped my understanding so much! After church, everyone brought food and we feasted. In most or all areas of Thailand they will eat food after church except in Phuket. However we finally got food this week and it was so good or as my อีสาน (Isaan) friends like to say it แซ่บอีหลีอิหลอกะด้อกะเดี้ย

Overall I just feel blessed and full of gratitude. I am serving in the country of my dreams, in the most wonderful area, with the happiest and nicest people. I shared this scripture with one of the members who has been sick and isn't feeling much joy in her life. When she started reading the scripture she began to cry. It is in Alma 37 and it says:

Alma 37:36-37
"36 Yea, and cry unto God for all thy support; yea, let all thy doings be unto the Lord, and whithersoever thou goest let it be in the Lord; yea, let all thy thoughts be directed unto the Lord; yea, let the affections of thy heart be placed upon the Lord forever.
37 Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day."

The Lord loves us all so much and I know he is looking out for each and everyone of you! If you are hurting or struggling just turn to Him and he will wipe away all your tears and lift you up!

Cool experience:
This week I woke up one day and just did my normal routine. When I got out of the shower my phone had stopped working for no reason. I had tried to get it to work the whole day but it wouldn't turn on. It was frustrating because I couldn't set up appointments or contact anyone. I had tried so many things and nothing had worked until after I prayed. I didn't say to magically have the phone turn on, but I just asked God to please help me find the way to turn on this phone. I tried something different and it immediately turned on! My comp was telling me the whole day it was broken and that it wouldn't turn on even if I prayed. Sometimes in life we just got to have faith and turn to God in prayer. Anyways love you all and have an awesome week! Sorry there are so many pictures!

Week 24: Ghost stories and Monkeys

Hey yall!! Another super great week on the mission and since it is almost Thanksgiving I just want to say how grateful I am for all of my family, friends, and this beautiful country, Thailand! I feel like I have been remarkably blessed in the year 2018. I have been called to serve in the place I have always wanted to, I am a missionary for God's church, and I have so many people supporting me along the way. Thank you so much!!

Okay, I'm just gonna dive into the week. You all are probably wondering why I titled this week as Ghost stories but don't worry I haven't seen or experienced any ghosts myself. But, one night after scripture class I was whistling to myself and two of my investigators started getting pretty upset. I was not sure why, so then they told me that I was not allowed to whistle - that it was prohibited! They said after 6pm nobody is allowed to whistle or ghosts will come and get you. They went on to explain that if you sleep with your feet towards the door then the ghosts will enter into your soul as well!! I didn't know if they were just messing with me, but they were actually dead serious. So just a warning...DO NOT WHISTLE AT NIGHT IN THAILAND.

This week we had a meeting on how to teach English more effectively. I learned a lot about focusing wholly upon each person individually and serving them to their needs and skills! Learning Thai and teaching others English has really opened my eyes about the world. I really don't know how to explain it but, I guess I just understand the world a bit differently now.

We did a lot of good inviting this week but at the same time, unfortunately we had to drop two of the people we were teaching. They weren't progressing at all and it just breaks my heart when we have to stop visiting someone I care about. However, from English class we got some great new people and they came to scripture class, sports night, and church. I truly believe that God is working through them and softening their hearts. It is a mom and her 2 children (11 & 14). They loved church so much and have such a desire to learn! After church ended the 2 kids told me they walked there all by themselves, and believe me they live pretty far away.

My comp and I were studying in the scriptures. We looked for a common theme in successful missionaries, specifically Alma. Alma talks about his success with visiting the poor and needy because they had humbled themselves and were meek in heart already. We decided to visit the poorest area of Phuket and it was extremely eye-opening. We went from 1st or 2nd world country to definitely 3rd world. These people had destroyed houses with no walls on some sides! They had no doors and they slept on hard wooden tables. They didn't even have the table to themselves; there were 2-3 people on each table. They just worked all day just to have food to eat that night and yet they were the nicest people. I am in awe with people that have so little and are still able to find joy in life. This Thanksgiving season I encourage all of you to be grateful for even the smallest things like drinking water, a room, food, unripped clothes, etc. We have been blessed with so many more things than so many of our fellow brothers and sisters around the world.

I am grateful for you all. This next week, Thailand has this lantern festival called ลอยกระทง (Loi Krattong). It is similar to Thanksgiving in the way that they give thanks to the things, but they have floating lanterns, too. It's gonna be so sick. I'm so excited and can't wait to fill you in on all of it next week. That's about it for the week. Love you all!

Hi

I will definitely pass on your comments to the stake youth.

My dad reads and loves all of your emails.  He thinks so highly of you that you can be in Thailand and learn the language but even more important is that you are being a missionary.  I was surprised that he follows you so closely.  He quoted your email to me.  He really cares!!!  Yes he attends church (sacrament meeting & Sunday school).  He can only do two hours Because of his back.  He truly has a testimony of the restored gospel and believe the teachings of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He has given in to Satan’s temptations.  I don’t see him ever giving up alcohol but then again I didn’t think he would come back to church.  About three years ago he asked me to help him find his ward after a very heartfelt talk with him.  He said he’s been attending ever since.

He and Alison love you .  They are so proud of you and wanted to make sure I told you.  ❤️❤️❤️.

I was so touched to hear him say that.

I love you.  Have a great week

Week 23: Choose Ye This Day

11/12/18

Hey everyone! I have hit my 5 month mark on my mission and my 3 month mark in Thailand!! This was another great week in the land and I feel like I grew so much this week. The language growth comes super slow but I am talking more about growing more spiritually and developing more Christ-like attributes. I can truly see the Lord's hand in this work when I open my eyes and allow him to help me.

I saw so many miracles this week! At English class more people came this week and as a result we got 3 new people that we are now teaching. This week I got to do some solid inviting and just walking around and finding people who are prepared. I love being a missionary and every time I get rejected or laughed at I look at it as an opportunity not to get laughed at the next time I talk to someone!

This week I decided to go play soccer with the little kids and they loved me for some reason. I was all dressed up in my missionary attire and doing these fast little drills with about 8 or so little boys. Afterwards I told their coach I taught English every Tuesday night and all the kids were so interested. I ended up passing out all my English cards and the little kids all said they were coming next week!! Being a missionary is the greatest calling for real.

Funny story:
While we were inviting this week we saw this man doing some house work and I asked him if he needed any help. He just kept saying มาแล้ว like 5 times in a row, which means you've already come to my house before. He was referring to some other missionaries before I came to this area who gave him a picture of Jesus Christ. Anyways he invited me and my companion in and had told us that he believes in Jesus Christ but also worships Buddhism and some other Chinese Gods. At the end of our visit and thanked us for stopping by by smelling my nose and kissing under my ear! Little strange haha.

So zone conference was this week and I felt like everything was directed at me and my companion. As a whole mission we are focusing on becoming consecrated missionaries. I learned so much about choosing this day, not tomorrow or the day after, to serve the Lord. We all, many times in life, simply procrastinate. We put off simple tasks or maybe even difficult ones for a later day. I learned how crucial it is that we remember to serve the Lord and serve for the Lord. We all have difficult days where maybe we don't want to work but I challenge everyone "to choose that this day will be the best day of my life!" There's no need to delay or procrastinate.

Also a great takeaway from zone conference was LOVE! A big focus was on inviting others and sharing the gospel with everyone we encounter. But inviting really comes down to this basic question, "do I love this person enough to talk to them." The most important commandment is truly to love the Lord with all thy heart and love thy neighbor as thyself. Everything I do as a missionary is centered on love!

Speaking of love, I went on a switch off with my district leader this week and he showed me what it means to love the people! He focused and listened intently to what the people said to him. He would go up to them and smile and shake their hand and show that Christ like love. He told me that you just got to remember to love everyone because we are all God's children, and he wants us all to return back to Him.

Take-away this week:
-Love God and each and every one of his children with perfect love
-Choose today what type of person you want to be in the world
-Be an example to those around you
-My parents are the best for sending me 3 packages
-My stake is also the best for sending me a bunch of candy with super sweet notes
-Phuket deserves consecrated missionaries

I’m glad we saw it too.  The new Mission home is were your dad served in his last area - Asoke.  We also went to that chapel for stake conference.  Isn’t it great that we know the places related to the church that you write about.  Mark would already know but I love that I can feel it in my heart too.  I’m so proud of you.  I love you so much.  You have grown up so much in these few months and you were already grown up when you left.  I guess we never run out of chances to learn.

Hello from Utah

Really!! That's so cold and yet you were warm! How crazy! I miss Devon and hope he knows how much I care for him and live him! He is such a great guy and an example to me!

Does you dad really attend church every week? That is honestly wonderful! I didn't think he cared that much that I went on a mission! That's so wonderful that he is able to go to church and feel the saviors love each week! Does he partake of the sacrament? Even though he drinks still?

So glad that I got your packages this week and I got a package from the stake in Kentucky. They sent letters and a bag full of candy and I just feel so blessed that so many people are looking after me! Tell all the youth that I really appreciate all the candy and kind words! It makes life soo sweet when I get home from a hard day of work and I have a bag of American chocolate to eat from! Blessings!!

Thank you so much for your package and all those snacks and candy too. Also I am grateful for those new pants cause I definitely needed them. I love you so much and you are such a great mom just remember that!

Extra great photos too:

Norman Stumler - Devon best friend since we moved to Kentucky when he was only seven, they hung out together all the time.  They did so much together:  they attended the same elementary school, they did scouts together, but most of all they were  friends that played together and were there for each other.  This week Norman
was his Best Man Norman's Mom, Julie Stumler - like another mom to Devon.  She had him over many times while they grew up.
Ethan Hansen - Devon's other best friend since we moved to Kentucky when he was seven.
Josh Teasdale - Josh moved to Kentucky during Devon's Sophomore year, and they immediately became great friends.  Josh was a year younger, but that didn't stop them.  They hung out all the time, ran XC together, attended seminary and went to the same school.
James Cluff -    Devon and James became friends when James moved to Kentucky during high school.  They went on high adventures together, and hung out on weekends.
Steven Saxey - Devon and Steven were in different wards and attended different schools, but they both ran XC, both had seminary together and did scouts together at a young age.   Devon's known Steven since he was nine years old.
Hannah Orr - (now married).  Hannah and Devon were great friends and had a fun fact that their  birthdays were only two days apart from each other.  Their moms are best friends.

For me, it was also so wonderful to see the Olsens, the Teasdales, Devon's mission president and wife - President Winder, Alex Fielding and his wife came (Devon and Alex were friends when we lived in St. George and in Kentucky - they also served their missions together in Boise, ID).

Jenny Roberts and her two girls came.  It was so good to see her.
