Robert goes on High Adventure

This year the Varsity Boy Scouts are going to Big South Fork National Park in Oneida, TN (Tennessee).  The boys are very excited.

Unfortunately, Robert came home from the lake with Aaron a little sick and not feeling well and a LOT sunburned.

He didn't enjoy my treatment, but it was very effective - I would rub ice on his arms and legs until it melted.  He would also use ice packs from the freezer, but they aren't as effective.  After I would ICE him, Mark would spread Aloe Vera on his burn.

Luckily his high adventure isn't for a few days.  Tuesday, during the day Robert was supposed to pull out everything he needed for high adventure while I was at work ... but he didn't so that put a lot of pressure on to get it all packed up in before 8:30 - especially considering that the same night Devon is getting set apart as a missionary.

Betsy helped him label everything and get it packed up.  He is all set.  We dropped him off at Brother O'Brien's at 9:00 (only 30 minutes late).  We took photos and the boys were off.

The boys going on High Adventure are:  Robert, Aaron (Ben's cousin), Max Miller, Will Burton, Riley Burton, Zac Fisher, Talon Brovont, Austin Stevens and Trevor Underwood.  Leaders were Rusty O'Brien, Brian Miller, Jim Brovont, Jordan Hillam, and Jed Gold.

Wednesday:  The first day they set up camp and went hiking; it was very hilly.  They hiked for 5 to 10 miles (I really don't know).  They also cooked their own dinner and made their tents out of what was in the wilderness.

Thursday:  The second day the boys went canoeing.  They canoed over 20 miles on the Cumberland River.  It was a drive to get there, and then a drive to get back to camp.

Friday:  The third day was mountain bike riding.  They had wanted to go 50 miles like when Devon did High Adventure, but there were some boys that had just not trained for the activity so the boys were held to 25 miles.  That was fine - they still accomplished their 50 miler requirements to earn the 50 miler patch.

Saturday:  Finally, they cooked breakfast, broke camp and came home.  They arrived at the church around 1:00 pm.  We unloaded and helped clean up.  What a great adventure!

Robert's been on the go for 2 weeks straight!  It will be good for him to have a rest before heading off to his next camp...soccer camp.

Betsy is Offered a Full Time Job Opportunity

Wow, okay this came out of the blue.

I came into work and around 10:00 am and Rick came to see me.  He said that Susan was taking a job with her husband's family and so now Tara is taking her job.  Rick wanted to know if I would be interested in the accounts payable position - It is full time!

I would love the job but I would like it to be part time.  How can I manage both?

It isn't often a good job will come around where they already know me and know my needs.  But on the other hand I have always wanted to be there for our kids.  The summer is a hard time for me to be away - there are only 6 weeks until school starts but that is a lot of time.  Once school starts it should be a problem.  They are willing to work with me if I would need to take Robert to soccer practice. 

It's a lot to think over.

Devon Leaves for His MISSION

Wow, I can't believe this day have finally come - I know Devon is ready and so excited for this next chapter in his life, but I don't know if I am ready...

We left the house at 5:30 am to get Devon to the airport at 6:00.  We walked him down to security ... and that is as far as we can go ... it's time to say good bye.

Next up is Marissa - so cute! They really got close the years that they drove to seminary together.  Marissa is so proud of him, but she will miss him, too.

Then it was time for Betsy.  I always have it the hardest.  I love my kids so much.  I'm so happy for Devon - more than anyone could ever know.  To see this day come become a reality after all the "I'm never going on a mission" chants we hear when he was a young child, and all the lessons we worked on so he'd be prepared for his day (and then next 2 years ... and the rest of his life ... essentially).  But at the same time, the reality that I won't see this most amazing young man for the next too years brings tears to my eyes.  I love him so much and will miss him so much.  Especially now that we've had the last 6 weeks together.  We've had so much fun together.    Devon has brought me so much joy in my life!  I am so proud and happy for him for this moment, too!  I guess it's the "ying" and the "yang."

Devon gets Set Apart as a Missionary

It's the night before Devon leaves to report to the MTC.  It's a busy day ... let's backtrack

So Devon was supposed to get up - take Marissa to ACT so he could have the car  and go to the dentist... but he didn't wake up.

I was picking Robert up from soccer practice when I got a call from the dentist office asking if Devon was on his way... no ... he's still asleep.  So, I call Devon and tell him to wake up, get ready and, NOW, I have to drive him to the dentist - which means I will now be even later for work.  We make it to the dentist by 9:45 am.  check.  I get him home by 10:30 am and leave for work.  While I'm gone Devon is supposed to go over his check list and make sure he has everything necessary to pack up.

His flight is at 7:00 am tomorrow, but more importantly he is being set apart at 5:00 today.

Because I had to go into work late, I have to leave work late.  I don't get off until 3:15.  I have to stop and get Robert's new shoes and so I don't get home until 4:00.  Devon is standing there waiting for me to cut his hair ... ugh.

We do a super good but super fast job cutting his hair and getting him all Missionary Prepared before going to see the Stake President.  We have NO extra time.  Devon gets dressed and off we go.

What is amazing is that even with all that chaos - as soon as we pull up to the church there is a huge wave of calmness that sweeps over all of us.  I'm at peace, Devon is too!

Next, we are invited back.  Devon receives a beautiful and special blessing as he is set apart to do the Lord's work for the next two year!  We are so touched by the Lord's love for him and our family!

Now it's time to finish packing him up and preparing for the BIG good bye that's tomorrow!

Week 57

Ok guys!

Transfer week is this Wednesday and I’ve heard some rumors that I'm getting transferred!! Ive got split emotions because I am excited to go to a new area and meet nee people but I am going to miss Calapacuan so so SO much!! I have the best memories here an the best recent converts here! I am going to bawl my eyes out when I have to say goodbye to Saricris, Mhae and Hajie... its gonna be ugly haha. Hajie worked with the elders yesterday and is stronger than ever now! Saricris and Mhae are both attending institute now every week and are loving it! Adela started crying yesterday when I told her I might be leaving it was so hard!

So it is officially rainy season. WET WET WET. It rained everyday this week…like buckets haha, and it flooded up to my mid calf. Talk about adventure, haha. Its great though and its so weird to thing I got here this time last year!!! 

On this day last year I was leaving the MTC and called you guys and got on the plane to get here! Now look where we are! I am in my 3rd area almost 4th, speaking Tagaolg, on my 10th companion, Devon is leaving on his mission in 2 days and a lot of my friends are now coming home from their missions! Its crazy!! I am so thankful I decided to serve my mission- best choice I’ve ever made hands down. 

The Calapacuan Zone - Victors!!!

So in other events, We had a sweet mission activity last week!! We all separated into our zones and played games and did relay races and jeopardy! Calapacuan zone won no surprises there haha. It was so fun!! I got to see all my friends from the mission and hear all their cool experiences!  

What else what else... Oh! Ok so you know how Hajies brothers hate on us all the time and don’t support their mom or brother? well, I talked to them about it and taught them about charity and now they are super nice to us!! We are also now teaching Paul Anthony, Hajies 20 year old brother!!!!!!! It’s amazing how the lord changes hearts. Well next week ill let you know what happens!  Either I will be here at Kryslyns baptism or in another area! Love you bye!!!!!! Sorry my emails are crazy and probably nonsense. haha

Thursday was a special day for Marissa because she was getting her senior pictures taken at Craig Paul studio.  She had some great poses - I can't wait to see the proofs.

She will go back next week for a special shot by the tiger Lillie's (which weren't in bloom yet). 

She also has her locust grove shoot on July 1st.  :)

Devon Adult Leader at Scout Camp

So while Robert was a Crooked Creek boy scout camp, Devon volunteered to be an Adult Leader at the camp.  He went down on Wednesday morning and stayed thru Friday afternoon, when I picked him and Robert up at 1:00 pm.

Devon did a fantastic job.  All the other "Official" leaders kept telling me what a great job Devon did with Parker and Alex and all the other boys.  They were so impressed and I know Devon was just being Devon.  I'm so proud of him.  He has really taken his leadership to a whole new level.

This was great preparation for his mission.

Robert's last year in scout camp

Robert - a few months back wanted to go to scout camp - then a few months later changed his mind.  Of course that was after Mark and I had signed him up and had other boys and leaders counting on him attending, so we stuck to our original plan and had Robert go.

He had an exciting week planned with activities like ATV riding from 8:00 - 12:00 every morning, then lunch with the troop.  After lunch Robert had three merit badges:  Leather works, Wood carving and sculpting.  Then it was dinner time and free time.  After dinner all the boys did the Oceanography merit badge.  The biggest highlight of the week was something called GAGA BALL.

All the boys loved it, Robert and Devon especially!

One day while at camp Robert wanted to pass off his mile Swim.  It's a special patch the boys can earn.  Well, the weather canceled it until the next day, so then the next day Robert went down to do the mile swim again.  He was more than half way through his swim when all of the sudden the life guards shout out that they can't find someone and order everyone out of the lake so they can look.  Robert was so glad to hear the boy was fine and nothing serious happened, but he was disappointed that the two times he had the opportunity to swim the mile, he didn't get to (finish).  

On Friday, Betsy showed up at 1:00 to pick up the boys.  They cleaned camp and loaded up the car and we headed home.  First we stopped at Sonic for some food - Devon was so hungry and so was Robert.  They ate and ate.

Actually Robert said the food at camp was great and he ate every night except Thursday night so he was hungry!

Robert had a great week.  He spent the week with Trevor Underwood, Zac Fisher and Jay Harvey.  It was a great time.  They also were great "older scouts" to the younger guys!  So proud of them!

Kentucky Kingdom with Devon and Marissa TWICE

Tuesday:  Robert is at scout camp and Devon will be going there tomorrow so I decided to take Devon and Marissa on a day trip to Kentucky Kingdom.

We had a blast at the park.  It was a great day but cloudy.  We went straight to the water park and did as many water rides as possible.  We did the new tube rides, family tube rides and then we did the new tallest in America single slide.  It stands at 210 feet above ground.  awesome!!!  While we were waiting in line we could see a storm approaching... then I realized that storm is directly over where Robert is at camp - poor thing!!!  It was moving in our direction.  We needed to hurry this ride along so we would make it down before it hit!  It's going to be a loud, lightning summer storm...

We finally made it to the front of the line with only a few sprinkles falling...

Devon went first - brave as he is.  Then Marissa, because I didn't want her or him to see my face.  Then I went - oh my gosh!!!!!  You go straight down, and down, and down.

It was a blast.  As soon as I came down, the rain clouds broke open and it started to pour.  We gathered up our stuff and left ...

BUT WE CAME BACK ON SATURDAY

I was so tired of the fact that we didn't have any photos of all the fun we were having, but Devon didn't want his photo taken, so we honored that, but that didn't stop Marissa and I from doing our best.

Week 56 - no time

hey we have an activity on monday so i wont be able to email :( but president Querido gave us this time to just let you know were safe and ok! LOVE YOU BYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FYI:  A Facebook post commented on the activity - the Mission had 187 baptisms that month - so they deserved to celebrate!!!!  So awesome to have a mission president that rewards such excellence in his missionaries!

I got a New Job

So after being a substitute teacher for 7 1/2 years I have taken on a new job.

On Tuesday, June 3 I ran into an old friend, Steve Button, the owner of Proheat.  We were just chatting and I mentioned that I was interested in getting back into the business world.

He mentioned he had a new position opening and that I might be the perfect fit. On Friday, June 6, I interviewed with him, was deemed over qualified (but that's okay) and was offered the job. I'm very excited to start my new job.

I started my new job on Monday, June 9th.
My new job title is Support Staff
I work for Proheat, Inc. located in LaGrange, KY
The first day was training, but now I'm on my own.

Robert's best friend is Aaron Green.  His family has a lake house on Rough River Lake.  Aaron had been waiting for Robert to come home from Boy Scout camp all week so we allowed Robert to go for the weekend.

Robert loves to go to the lake - who wouldn't.  They get to sleep, eat and ride the wake board or water ski or jet ski all day!  They even get to play soccer, corn hole, and roast marshmallows and make smokes.  What would be better???

Before Devon leaves on his mission I want him to have some memorable moments with his brothers and sisters so I made sure we took time to go to Kentucky Kibgdom.

I took Devon and Robert and we had a great day.  We did the tornado and a few smaller rides.  We are pizza and had drinks.  It was very crowded but we really had fun.

These guys are so much fun together.  I think Robert is really going to miss Devon when he's gone and Devon is going to miss Robert - but he'll be preoccupied with his mission :\

Last day of school

Robert and Marissa were so excited for the last day of school.  This year it came on Friday, June 6th.  Robert had some finals!!!  He did great.

Both Robert and Marissa had a great year - Robert finished with all A's and Marissa had all As and Bs (the Bs in AP classes).  

So happy it's officially summer!!

Marissa finished the year with all A's except for her 2 AP classes which she earned B's which convert to A's on an unweighted scale!  AWESOME YEAR - they are so glad it's over!

Marissa is now officially a senior and Robert is a sophomore!

So far behind on my blog

I couldn't believe it.  I went to update the blog about scout camp and realized it had been two weeks since I entered anything - and so much had happened in those two weeks.  Kinda crazy - how could I let that much time slip by?

Well, hopefully I can get it all caught up soon and hopefully I didn't forget something important.

This is like my journal - I really enjoy writing the articles, but more importantly I cherish that the information, feelings and happenings are recorded for ever and ever.

Week 55 - Can we say SPIDERS

So today it's already been an adventure! haha. We woke up cleaned the apartment from top to bottom, cooked, hand-washed our clothes, killed a spider the size of my palm, studied the scriptures and then went to the mission home where on the jeepnie I killed another spider the size of my hand! (I felt like Ron and Harry in Harry Potter 2 when they are killing massive spiders with huge clubs, but my club was our cell phone hahaha) We went to the mission home because they are having a missionary reunion there and because we live so close we were invited because my trainer is there!! Sister Calaunan has been home for 11 days now and it was so good to see her again!!!! She was super freaked out by all the changes back home and wanted to come back to the mission hahaha.

Guys don't change too muck ok? I don’t want to be freaked out with a bunch of new babies and stuff k? All you friends from BYU you're not allowed to get married yet! haha just kidding... kind of :) But it just made me realize how lucky I have been to be able to serve the Lord for 13 months and be away from all the problems of the world.

So this week we had 4 baptisms!!! Yayyyyyyyyy! Also Brother Mercurio (our long time less active) is going to church again and reading the Book of Mormon everyday!!! Every week is a miracle :) Me and Sister Enguito are working really hard here in Calapacuan and we are really excited for the month of June! I love it here and I love my recent converts!! They are THE best :) I'm a little short on time today since we went to the mission home but I love you all and hope you are doing great!!!!! Take care of Devon! I hear he just got his wisdom teeth out! We all remember how that went for me 2 years ago haha :)

Alan Lowe gets Married!

Alan Lowe and Laurel were divorced at the end of March (so sad) but both Laurel and Alan moved on quickly; I guess because their relationship had really ended a year or so back.  So, when Alan announced he was getting married, Mark was excited to attend the wedding.

We all would have liked to attend, but it was the weekend before school gets out and there are all sorts of finals and try outs coming up.

Mark flew out on Friday, May 30th.  He had Friday and Saturday to spend with friends and family in the area.

Friday night was a great night for Mark.  He got together with a bunch of THAI friends - people he hadn't seen since his mission.  He was so happy to see them again and reconnect with them.

Saturday he spent with his family.  He was given a huge surprise. ... Linda came from Thailand.  So all his brothers and sister were together again.

Sunday was the wedding.  Alan and Susan were married at a friends house.  It was gorgeous.

Mark returned home Monday night.

Mark Started Working at the Temple

Mark was called and set apart to work in the temple.  Every other Friday night (2x a month) Mark works at the Louisville temple.

Devon's Wisdom Teeth come out

On Thursday, May 29 at 9:30 am Devon had his appointment to get his wisdom teeth out by Dr. Jamie Warren.

Devon was an excellent patient.  He got a little faint either from the IV or the laughing gas, but he quickly recovered and endured the proceedure.  Devon's wisdom teeth were very high (they probably didn't need to come out) and so they were a tough job. 

Devon's doctor warned us that he would have a lot of swelling and pain because of the teeth's position.  Amazingly, after the first day, Devon really didn't have any pain.  He did however, have swelling.

Devon was a strong cookie - he didn't have any kind of "funny" reaction to the laughing gas like Jessica and Marissa.  He was very child-like but he didn't say crazy sentences or make "out-of-the blue" comments.  After an hour he was almost completely back to normal. 

Our biggest challenge with Devon was finding SOFT food that he would like.  We came to realize Devon doesn't really like soft food.  It must be a texture thing.  Luckily we found enough soft foods to make it through the few days that he was required to eat soft foods - bananas, pudding, rice with teriyaki sauce, ... he tried oatmeal (but said he didn't like it).  He doesn't like mashed potatoes, jello, mac and cheese ... ugh.

I think he has a very high threshold for pain and a high ability to handle medicine.

By Sunday the stitches came out and he was HAPPY to eat real food again.

I got accepted to the University of Louisville!

I'm so excited

I've always wanted to finish my degree in business!  now I can.

Tuition is out of this world, hopefully we can make this happen!!!!

Week 54 - new companion

Hey guys!

Well, like I said last week, we had transfers this week and as I sadly predicted... Sister Burt got transferred :( yup we cried like babies haha.)

We just became such besties here in Calapacuan and we had so much success here together... I really miss her... BUT I’m still here in Calapacuan and I am very happy about that because I just LOVE the people here! Every single area that I go to just seems to get better and better! Hajie, Mhae, and Saricris are doing AMAZING and are seriously like some of my best friends now, and it just amazing to see the huge change in them and their lives. I feel so blessed to be just a small part of it :) 

SO I’m sure you all are wondering who is my new companion?? da da da daaaaa... Sister Enguita! She is sooooo nice! She is from the Philippines down in Mindanao and she's been on her mission for 10 months. Right now I am training her to be an STL and she is just the most humble and sweetest people I've ever met. We are working really hard in our area to bring as many souls to God as we can! 

We have 4 baptisms the week on Saturday!!!! We are super excited for them and we also have more baptisms coming up in June!! I love missionary work, it is the BEST work on the planet :) It may not be the easiest time of my life but it is the best thing for my life. So i also have new housemates in the apartment! Its me, sister Enguito, sister Talent and... Sister Lariosa!!!!! Yup, my trainee is now in my house again!!! we were so excited to see each other again :) I've missed that cute girl. So its approaching rainy season again, and its already flooded a couple times here. 

The day before sister Burt left we forgot our umbrellas that day and on our way home got SOAKED! I mean completely wet as if we had jumped in a pool with our clothes on haha it was awesome :) Well, I'm sure i'll have lots more to tell you next week, but for  now just now that I love you all and know my savior lives. He sacrificed for us and died for us so that we can return to him. I love my Heavenly Father and my redeemer Jesus Christ :) Lets all keep sharing the good news!  Love you all!

MY Eagle Scouts

So proud of both my boys for earning the rank of Eagle Scout.  I had to get a photo of them together!!

At the memorial Day breakfast I was able to get a photo of Robert and Devon together in their scout uniforms.  I have wanted this photo ever since Robert made Eagle.  I actually had taken a photo like this, but there was no "film" in the camera... ugh!!!  Today was a very happy day for mommy!

So far behind on my blog

I couldn't believe it.  I went to update the blog about scout camp and realized it had been two weeks since I entered anything - and so much had happened in those two weeks.  Kinda crazy - how could I let that much time slip by?

Well, hopefully I can get it all caught up soon and hopefully I didn't forget something important. 

Respect, Robert and being Grounded :(

For a while now Robert has had an attitude that has been very disrespectful (in my opinion).  We had tried to ignore some inconsequential things, but it was getting out of hand so we came up with a way to help him see how important it is to be respectful to others - mainly me.

See Robert (I'm sure due to "rights" teaching at school) believed he was equal to his parents - and in some ways he is - he is a child of God, just as we are, but what he was forgetting is that we are his parents, not siblings, not friends, not peers - parents.  God entrusted us to take care of him, teach him, love him, guide him.  Not the other way around. 

Somehow he got it in his head he could just talk to us any which way and say rude and hurtful things to make a point.  We don't talk like this at home so it made me wonder where he was getting this influence.  He is wonderful in school, church, etc.  It's just at home that he has this misconception that he can talk any way he wants.  If he talked like that to me at school, he'd be in the office.  It was way out of line!

Well, long story short - it came to a breaking point - and I mean BETSY YELLING at him breaking point.  It took about a minute for her to calm down, and that is when the consequence came out.

As much as soccer is important to you, Respect to others is important to me - so until you learn to be respectful to others, there is no more soccer.  It breaks my heart (literally, I think because I love to watch him play soccer and I know how much he loves soccer - plus try outs are coming up) but I will not allow nor tollerate that type of talk. 

If we allow it now, it will just get worse (as we have witnessed).  He must learn to not say some of the things he thinks. 

So, unfortunately, Robert is grounded from soccer (and other things as deemed by mom) until he can act respectfully towards his parents and siblings.

State Track and Field Championship Meet

Everyone is so excited for the State Track meet.  We are predicted to take first place!!!

Well, the week leading up to the State Meet has been a horrible week for Marissa.  She's been suffering with Asthmatic Bronchitis and hasn't been able to shake it.  The timing is the issue.  If it had come sooner, she'd be better by now, but it came right at the worst time.  She's been on 6 - SIX - medicines (prednizone, z-pack, albuteral, singular, claritin, and sudafed) but they all take time and consistent timing to take effect.

Marissa missed three days of practice and then went back Monday - Wednesday this week but they were all slow days, and tapering.  She hadn't run at full force since the regional meet where this was brought on.

Her race isn't until 8:10 at night.  I really hadn't seen Marissa before the race until she was in the middle of the track for "line ups."  I gave her a thumbs-up, but she did't look to positive.  She smiled back, so I couldn't tell if she was okay or not.  I brought her nebulizer just in case ... I'm so worried.

They line the girls up and off they go.  Marissa is keeping a great pace with the other runners, she and Avery are very close together around 4th or 5th place, but then Marissa starts to fall back.  I keep cheering her on, but she looks like she's struggling - that's to be expected since she has had such a hard time.  No one else knew except her, but she was suffering an asthma attack in silence and didn't know what to do.

Right there between the 3rd and 4th lap her throat starts to close up.  With each lap it gets tighter and tighter, making it harder and harder to breath.  She finishes the race, but then grabs her throat.  That's when I know something is really wrong.  Oh my gosh!!!!

I race out of the stands to her.  She's so weak, she can bearly stand and she has no voice.  She keeps saying she needs her inhaler.  Coach Grimm had already taken off running for her inhaler while I walk with her.  Then Coach Sykora comes running back with it.  Marissa takes two puffs but there is no respite.  UGH!!!  She can't really take any more.  She takes some sips of water and the medicine starts to take effect.  We walk her over to the medic tent for them to check her vitals and administer to her.

OH MY GOSH!!!!  That was the biggest scare - she couldn't breath.  She couldn't breath.

She ran a 2 mile race in 12:34 while having an asthma attack.

Well - the girls went on to finish the last race - the 4x400 and did great - we took 1st place.

As a whole our team was named AA state Champions!!!!  They are the first girl team from NOHS to claim a state championship!  

Amazing Last Game of the Season vs CSC Gold

It's hard to believe that the last game of the season was supposed to be played 10 days prior at home, but tonight, after President's Cup, we are playing for the league championship.  Robert's teammates are still injured so he starts as the outside mid.  He has a GREAT GAME! -- THE WHOLE GAME!

Robert plays most of the first half.  Some exciting plays include Tanner's power shot (but went wide), Robert's corner, and Ian's shot.  He is subbed out to give him a rest since we only have 12 players for the whole game.  Michael comes in and immediately scores our first goal from Tanner's assist.  AWESOME 1-0.  We had a couple more shots - Keller shot, Garrett shot and Henry shot.  Robert was subbed back in - he was out 8 minutes.  We had a few more shots before the end of the half.  1-0.

Robert started the second half.  The shots started firing at CSC Gold right from the start - Tanner shot, Keller shot, Robert had another corner; Henry headed it just outside the goal.  bummer!  Michael took another shot, and then Michael passed to Tanner for a goal.  2-0.

Garrett shot, and then on a great run, Robert passed to Henry and Henry headed it in for our 3rd goal.  3-0. 

Trent was moved to forward and it was as if he was possessed - he wanted a goal so bad and he got one 4-0.  The CSC Gold team really were defeated at this point.  Robert had another corner kick.  It was so good to see him taking chances. 

The game ended 4-0.  WAY TO GO KFJ!!!
