Devon Week 70 - roofing

We have done 3 roofing jobs.  I have learned to roof but I still need one more roof job to say that I could roof a house without someone aiding.

We had Leadership exchanges this week.  Elder Ray went two Boise South for a day and I stay and had Elder Brunette and Elder Stark (previous Assistant to the president). It was cool to do missionary work with them to learn from them about how they find people.  Our mission found 107 investigators in a week which is a new record!!!!      

I am excited to learn in Zone conference is next week Elder Martino of the 70 is coming.  I am in the mission choir sing as 2nd base and we hope to impress Elder Martino.  It will be enlighten to learn about his insights.   

Hope is one of our new investigators that is progressing.  She is about to be adopted and we are waiting for her to be adopted before we ask her to be baptized.  She has a lot of faith and we are confident that she will be baptized.

Fall Break

Each day of Fall Break I took Robert out to lunch.  It was my way of doing something fun with him even though I had to work.  I even took a half day on Wednesday to take him to see the movie Martian.

Monday we went to Gustavo's in Crestwood.  He had never been there - he liked the chicken quesadilla.
Tuesday we met at IHOP in Louisville.  Super YUM!  It's tradition to start the fall at IHOP with hot chocolate and pancakes!
Wednesday we met at Stake and Shake before going to Tinseltown for the movie called Martian.  I really like the movie because it is all about having a problem - and solving it!
Thursday we met at Noodle and company.  Robert loves this place.  I got him two (2) bowls of buttered noodles - he ate all of it!  Way to go Robert!  After eating we went over to American Eagle and I bought him two pairs of jeans and stuff.  It was a nice time together.
Friday we met at the Cheesecake Factory - his favorite place to eat!!!  He had his favorite - Chicken Romano and I had steak medallions.  We both had our favorite cheesecake after lunch.  He loves Adam's Peanutbutter and I love the Chocolate Mousse.

Week 70 - Eric's baptism

So much has happened this week.  I went to two baptisms. 

This whole week we have been preparing for Eric Keren's Baptism.  On Thursday we found out that someone else was getting baptized the same day at the exact same time as Eric.   Apparently both of our Ward Mission Leader forgot to save the stake center, so we didn't know about this until our District Leader, Elder McCallson told us that we had a conflict.  Our Ward Mission Leaders talked and formed a combined baptism service. Eric was baptized this last Saturday by his LDS best friend, Jared Laneheart. We thought that Jared was also going to confirm him but Eric had not chosen a person to confirm him yet.  So we asked him who he would like to do that and he said I could do it.  I was able to confirm him in sacrament meeting.

So, I received a call last Wednesday from Elder Davis that Cody, an Investigator in my last area was getting baptized.  We got to attend Cody's Baptism on Thursday.  It was pretty exciting news because I didn't think that he would get baptized that soon so it was wonderful news.

We had a spiritual lesson with Nicole Keren after her husband, Eri's lesson.  We recommitted her to read the Book of Mormon.  The spirit was with us and Elder Ray asked her that if she read and found the Book of Mormon to be true then would she be baptized.  She said yes and we set a baptism date for the 5 of December.  I has been a great privilege to teach that family and I believe that they will be sealed one day. :)

Week 69 - Church CPR

Happy Columbus Day.  Today it is very smoky and hard to breath. 

We went contacting some less actives one of the people we tried name was David.  We came to the door and a woman answered the door and told us we could come back.  We came back and found out that David had moved and that the women name is Julie and she says that she has never meet missionaries before.  We are super excited to teach her she is really nice.  She has had many religious people be jerks to her so she was turned off from it but we rekindled her desire to know more about Jesus Christ.  

Eric Baptism is this Saturday I can’t wait for it.  I just have this feeling like he is going to have a really spiritual experience when he is baptized.  After he is baptized I am going to ask him if he would write down his conversion story so that I won’t forget it.  The power of the Book of Mormon, Pray, and Church are real and powerful.  I just love all three of those tools that Heavenly Farther gives us.  I like to call it CPR Church, Pray, Read   

Weekend with my Sisters (need to finish)

On Thursday I left work and drove north to Cincinnati and then over to Wheeling WV where I stayed the night on my trip to see both my sisters in Northern Virginia.

On my way there on Friday, I found my way to the Pennsylvania State Capital Building were my sweet and dear friend, Julieann Newill works.  I was hoping to meet her for lunch and catch up on all that we have missed through the years.  She was my Maid of Honor at my wedding and my roommate, co-worker and best friend back in 1990-1991.  We had a wonderful visit.  She is still very strong in the church but going through a rough time - and will probably divorce her husband, Doug this year.  So sad.

I arrived in Virginia and realized I was very close to my other bridesmaid, Sherri Blauer and decided to just stop by to see if she and her husband were home.  THEY Were!!!!  How amazing and wonderful.  We had a wonderful visit touring their new place and catching up.  They are very faithful and doing very well.

Then I made it to Reston were I met up with my sisters and we went to the Red Tavern to meet up with all of Sandy's High School Reunion friends for drinks (not me) before heading to the South Lakes Seahawks football game - it's perfect timing because tonight's game is against our rival - Herndon Hornets.  We won!!!!

Sandy, Kirstie and I had a super fun time together.  It felt strange to be in a familiar place but not know hardly anyone.  Melanie Kirsh and Lori Malone remembered me and were so sweet to talk and catch up.  This trip was really for Sandy to attend her High School reunion and I came along to support her!

After the game we went to Reston Town Center and met friends at Jacksons.  I remembered Brian Allen - he played basketball at Penn State.

Saturday...

I drove home all day Sunday - it was a very long drive, but it was super great to see my sisters!!!

Visit with Sherri and Reed Blauer

After a wonderful visit with Julieann, I continued my drive into Northern Virginia to see my sisters, Kirstie and Sandy ... but on the way I realized I would be driving directly past one of my other best friends from the late 80's / early 90's - Sherri Blauer Reed.  I took a chance that she would be home - since I didn't have her phone number so I just followed the google maps directions to her house.  The house I showed up at was deserted and the vegetation in the yard was over-grown.  CRAZY!  I know this is her last address.

I decided to go next door to see if they knew - or if they were adjoining properties.  Reed, Sherri's husband answered the door!  It was awesome!  I had a wonderful visit with Sherri and Reed.  They are doing so much on their new home!

It was now 5:00 and I needed to get on the road to meet up with my sisters, but the stop was worth the delay!

Can't wait to continue this wonderful weekend.

Visit with Julieann

I had the most amazing visit with my best friend from the late 80s - early 90s:  Julieann Klimovski - now Julieann Newill.  She was my Maid-of-honor and I was her Matron-of-honor.  We were so close!!

Well, on my way to Northern Virginia I stopped in Harrisburg, PA to see her.  I arrived right at 12:00 and stayed for 2 hours - we talked and talked.

Julieann works at the State Capital Building, and we visited in the Representative's office.  She is unhappy in her marriage, but is happy with the decisions she is making.  At present she is considering a divorce.  It is sad, but her husband has struggled with pornography their whole marriage - they've been married for 23 years, but it is soon to be ended.

Devon - week 67

We had another survey to do today :(  

We went over to Eric Keren house and taught him the Word of Wisdom and some of the commandments.  Eric has already been trying to quite Coffee for a couple 2 weeks and he has totally given it up.  He still has his baptism date for the 17 of October!!!   

After the lesson we asked him wife to help us figure out the baptism program and then Eric asked her if she wanted the lessons and she said that she did not have enough time but then we told her that we could teach lessons in 20 minutes or less and she agreed so we might be able to baptize the whole family!!!

We started out so strong and got an early goal.  1-0

We were definitely a stronger and more dominate team.  The game should have been a win.

Robert was injured in the first half and so was Michael Raybine.
Neither were able to go back in.

We ended in a tie 1-1.

Robert came home and iced his leg.  Betsy gave him anti-inflammatory.  We certainly hope he's okay.

Devon - week 66

I apologies that emails have been as weekly as they have been.  

It has been a wonderful to see the progress that we are making in our area.  We got to finally meet Br Funk who is struggling in his faith and is a Less Active.  He was honest about how he felt about the Gospel and the spirit was there as he talked about how he wanted to know these things for himself and not to say that he believed it because someone else believed it.  We challenged him to meet with us and we told him that we would teach him as a new investigator in which he said he would

Eric lesson went very well.  We brought over a green bureau and for ten min. they started to talk about their experiences that they had in the military and how that effected them emotionally to kill another person who they felt in there heart that they had no right to kill.  The gospel of Jesus Christ just flowed naturally as we talked about faith and repentance.  We promised him that he could feel forgiven.

Both wards have been doing better. The momentum is starting to pick up but we still need to find a bunch.

Hi Betsy!  It's Shelley Carson from Meridian, Idaho.  Elder Lowe served in our ward (Green Valley) for quite a while.  Today while driving by a park, one of our son's friends (Emma, who is not a member) saw the missionaries and jumped out of her car to take a picture with them.  She doesn't know Elder Lowe, but sent this picture to Jaden!  Missionary influence is everywhere!  Have a great night.

This was right after we found out Devon had to go to the doctor for an infection on his chin (from a hair follicle).  It was so great to see his face was healed and he was back to normal.

Saturday game vs St. Henry on their Senior Night

What a great day for a game, the weather is calm after a bit of rain earlier in the day.  The game is fairly evenly stacked.  St. Henry is very competitive to our boys, although St. Henry has out-shot us 14 to 5.  Ian Miller is in goal since Max is still sick.  He's done a great job.  At half time the score is still 0-0.

In the second half Grey Kinnison gets a goal from an assist from Keyon Gheyoumi at the 43 minute!  We are now up 1-0.  However, just as fast as we got that goal, we are tied - St. Henry scored at the 47th minute... and then we fall behind in the 52nd minute (2-1) ... then again at the 62nd minute (3-1).  

In all honesty the second half was a better half for us statistically; St. Henry only had 8 shots plus the three goals, and we had 6 shots and 1 goal.  It was a shame that we let our defenses down.  

 Robert wasn't involved in any of the plays.

Tough Stretch - Game vs Henry Clay in Lexington

Going into this game, everyone knows that they are currently ranked fourth in the state.

They have a large proportion of seniors on the team, and let me tell you - they are big.  One of their defenders, I kid you not, is at least 6'8".

This game is starting late because we had to travel from Prospect to Lexington during rush hour.  The JV game started late, and so that pushed our game back.  Robert starts on the wing again.  

This team is very aggressive and determined.  They have 17 shots and 5 shots on goal plus two goals in the first half compared to our 1 shot.  We are doing a great job defending ourselves against such a tough team.

The second half is better than the first ... Henry Clay only has 9 shots, 5 shots on goal and 2 goals.  We get 3 shots, 2 shots on goal and Keyon scored on a PK in the 76th minute of the game.

Robert played very aggressively.  

On our way home Betsy stopped at Walmart to see if she couldn't get the video - Evan Almighty for the seminary class, but they didn't have it.

We didn't get home until 12:00 am!!!!  Robert was exhausted.

Devon - week 65

This is the first "District" game of the season and so it counts just a little more than the other games.

Devon - Week 64 "Tribulations brings Blessings"

These past two weeks have been very memorable.  I am training Elder Ray who is from south California near the town of Rancho Cucamonga.  

These past weeks have been difficult but so rewarding.  I knew that we were going to have a difficult first weeks because we were both new to the area and I would also be training him.  I didn’t expect the physical roadblocks we were about to encounter. When Elder Ray was in the MTC he caught a cold.  Then he gave me the Cold. There has not been a day since we have been companions that both of us have been physically healthy.  Even today I still recovering.  We both had colds, he had food poisoning, teeth problems, bike problems, almost dislocated his hand.  My opinion is that he has had a pretty tough 2 weeks in the field so far.  I got a cold, my district Leader stepped on my leg by accident as I was running and brought me to stop, and I have had foot sore problems.  All of these could have caused us to take a sick day but we have kept working.  I have shotgun before and there were investigators when I went into the area.  This area on the other hand has only a few eternal investigators that are not really interested.  As a trainer I want to show how great it is to be a missionary and to help him be a better teacher.  Unfortunately we have not done to much teaching because we have been trying to find people. I am not telling you this to complain, to show how diligent we are, or to have you feel bad but to show that all scriptures are fulfilled D&C 58 and that God is Amazing 

 1 Hearken, O ye elders of my church, and give ear to my word, and learn of me what I will concerning you, and also concerning this land unto which I have sent you.

 2 For verily I say unto you, blessed is he that keepeth my commandments, whether in life or in death; and he that is faithful in tribulation, the reward of the same is greater in the kingdom of heaven.

 3 Ye cannot behold with your natural eyes, for the present time, the design of your God concerning those things which shall come hereafter, and the glory which shall follow after much tribulation.

 4 For after much tribulation come the blessings. Wherefore the day cometh that ye shall be crowned with much glory; the hour is not yet, but is nigh at hand.

 5 Remember this, which I tell you before, that you may lay it to heart, and receive that which is to follow.

 6 Behold, verily I say unto you, for this cause I have sent you—that you might be obedient, and that your hearts might be prepared to bear testimony of the things which are to come;    

For after much tribulation come the blessings.  We have to remember that no matter how big or small the tribulation blessings come. We have been praying and trying so hard to find people to teach. I know that this scripture and the scriptures are true, that God does answer prays and that there are really no coincidences. I have know this for a long time but this story strengthens it.   

On our first Sunday at the Meadowlark ward we met a man named Eric Keren.  Their seemed something about him that was special but we just thought that he was a member.  He then introduced himself in Gospel Principles as a Jew and an atheist.  His parents raised him as a Jew in tradition but not in belief.  He went into the Marines and after that he became a LAPD in LA.  He has seen a lot of death and destruction that has desensitized him to spiritual things. We asked him if he would be interested in learning more but he told us that he was not ready for us.  The next week at church he came up to us excitedly and said "guys I got revelation, I think I am ready to talk to you guys."  Elder Ray and I were blown away and excited too. We taught him last Monday - it was a long lesson but one of the best lessons.  We brought Cheri Graffus with us and she bore the perfect testimony to him.  He kept saying, "I felt the same way," and “me and you will get a long.”  They really connected on a spiritual level.  He had many questions and  a lot of them were really good questions that I have not thought about.  Yet, the spirit taught us what we should say. At the end of the lesson we asked him if he would read and pray with real intent if he would be baptized October 17 and when could we meet next.  He said yes to both and he asked us to come back this Thursday which is tomorrow.  God has prepared him so much.  We got a new investigator and a baptism date!!! 

Cheri Graffus is a recent convert that got baptized the same day that Veronica did, August 15.  We are teaching her the new member lessons.  She is on fire with Family History and the Gospel.  She is doing very well as a new convert.  

James Family are a really cool family that just got sealed recently.  They used to be bikers (motorcycle). 

Everyone is getting SICK (except Robert)

So ...

First Mark was sick for an entire week before Marissa went out to college.

Then on the day we arrive in Utah (August 25) Marissa comes down with a super sore throat and sinus congestion.  It's no sad, this is her first week and orientation at BYU!  She takes medicine and slowly improves.

At the same time, Jessica and Tate get sick on Thursday (August 27) - same thing - congestion, cold symptoms.  BOO!!!

Then on Sunday morning (September 6) Betsy wakes up with a super sore throat and sinus congestion.  She is miserable.  She takes medicine and slowly improves.

But, the worst happened Sunday night when Marissa got stomach sick and had to rush to the dorm bathrooms a few times to throw up.  She called home around 4:45 am miserable and feeling terrible.  She had NO strength, NO energy and felt terrible.  Oh, how my heart ached for her and I wished I could be there to comfort her.  She did all the things that I would have done for her.

We hope and pray she, Jessica, Tate and myself get well soon --- and that Robert can avoid getting sick.

Labor Day Weekend - Improvements around the house

7th Game Loss to Floyd County (need photos)

Although we didn't play as well as we usually do and lost the game, the boys as a whole fought hard and played hard against bigger and stronger boys.

Most of the Floyd County players were seniors - of which 2 of them were friends of Robert's from when he played up at Javanon.  Alex Gilespi and Harrison Rice.  Not to mention that their coach was Robert's coach for the same team.  He has been coaching at that school since 2010 (and maybe even before)  After the game, Betsy got a picture of Robert with the three of them.

We came from behind the whole game.  They got up by 1 only 8 minutes into the game, but then they got up by an amazing kick by our friend Alex #6 that just snuck by Max.  2-0:  But then we have an amazing chip from Dylan Smith to Gray Kinnison to make it 2-1 at half time.

After the half, Floyd County - #5 scores the third goal.  Luckily we scored again with 12 minutes left to play.  We need another goal and have a few opportunities, but just can't convert them into a goal.

Robert, Mason, Gray, Dylan, all take shots on goal in the second half.  It was a sloppy game by both teams, but we were close!!

Unfortunately, as soon as we arrived in Salt Lake City, Marissa started to feel slightly sick and congested.  We stopped and got her some Strawberry Halls and Sudafed.

Tuesday night I took Jessica, Tate, and Marissa to Olive Garden.

We had planned on hiking Mount Timpanogos on Wednesday, but with the weather being bad, Alan not being able to go and Marissa not feeling very good, we decided not to go.

Instead, Betsy and Marissa had so much fun getting her room set up.  We went to Target and bought hundreds of dollars of items - towels, storage, shelves, lamps, etc.  It's Betsy's way of trying to ease the "Homesick" feeling.

Wednesday night I took Jessica, Tate, Marissa, Ali (my niece Alex) and her boyfriend, Chris to dinner at IHOP.

Thursday she went off to "orientation" at 9:00 while Betsy went to the Parent orientation.  What a great time in her life.  I hope she remembers what was said.  I didn't get to see Marissa at all on Thursday.  I invited Tate and Jessica to come play with me in the indoor pool.

She met her roommate - Lead Dudley AND she met some great friends:  Meagan, Marlie and Carlie!

She also met some really nice guys, but she said all the guys are 20 years old - return missionaries that are attending BYU for the first time as Freshmen.  It will be interesting!

Friday, Sandy (Betsy's sister) came into Provo.  We sent the day together talking, tanning and relaxing at the Marriott pool.  That night we went to dinner at Romano's Macaroni Grill.  My dish was terrible so we got it for free.

Saturday we were going to Hike to the "Y" but decided to go to Seven Peaks Water Park instead.  It was Jessica and Tate, Alex and Chris, Marissa, Betsy and Sandy.  We had so so so much fun!!!

Another great game.  This time it was a blow out - like Carroll County would have been if we could have made our shots count.  Again Betsy was away so we don't have photos unless Mark took some.  We have video!!!  yeah!

4th game NOHS vs Carroll County

Robert started and had a great game.  Betsy was away so she wasn't there to take photos.  Mark videoed the game so she could see it later.

We had something like 37 shots / shots on goal, but only 2 goals.

We won 2-0.

Marissa leaves for college

It is always a sad morning when the family has to say good-bye to the kids leaving for college.

Today, we left for our traditional breakfast at McDonalds at 7:30.  We had a fun time together before taking Robert up to NOHS for his day at school.

He had to say good-bye to her there - it was very hard and sad.

She also got the chance to say good-bye to Meg O'Brien - her best friend.

Then Mark and Betsy drove her to the airport!  Mark was very emotional saying good-bye to his precious daughter!  It was so hard to walk away.

For me, it's a bit easier - I go with her and get her settled into college!

3rd game - Mustang Classic vs Ballard

Tonight at 6:00 pm Robert's NOHS soccer team played against Ballard High School.

Robert started as the Left Wing as he has for the past two games.  Tonight the coach moved Mason to forward and Keyon to mid - this proved to be a good move for the team (both Mark and I were excited to see the position change).

Not 10 minutes into the game Kaleb Patterson crossed the ball over to the middle.  After a few touches, it came directly to Robert who took one touch and nailed it for the first goal of the game!  WAY TO GO ROBERT!!!  1-0 NOHS

Robert played the whole half going back to help on defense and sprinting up to be there on offense.  He has really stepped up his attack!  He plays aggressive and challenges the ball  constantly.  He had a foul in the first half.

Around the 20 minute mark Robert had an amazing shot that just missed the goal by an inch or two.  It was a perfect shot under pressure from two defenders.  GREAT JOB!!!

Ballard scored on a defense mistake, making the score 1-1 at halftime.  Robert played the whole first half.

Robert didn't start the second half, but did come in after 15 minutes.  Almost immediately after Robert came in, the defense broke down again (Nathan didn't move to protect the goal) and Ballard scored 2-1.  UGH!!!

Now there is a lot of pressure to get another goal, but with this young team - that converts to long balls instead of working it up the field.  Robert went back to help on defense and then sprinted to mid and forward.  He had a great game.

At the end of the game, the coach awarded Robert the "Iron Sharpens Iron" award.  This is his second time getting the award.

Mark's best friends from HAWAII came for a visit this weekend.

It was Robert Bickmore (Bic) - whom has been friends with Mark since they were both 3 years old.  Mark moved to Hawaii when he was three and they have been the best of friends ever since.  Rob and Mark played basketball and tennis together.  They were both on the high school tennis team!  Rob or more affectionately know as BIC have stayed in touch even after graduation from HS, missions and graduating BYU!

The other to come was Alex Mattheus (Matt) - whom moved to Hawaii when he was 16/17 years old.  Mark and Bic befriended him, and shortly thereafter he joined the church.  Mark had the opportunity to baptize him.  What a special connection.  Alex was our best man, and Mark was his!

Anyway, the special occasion is the US Open in Cincinnati is this weekend.  Rob and Alex came in on Wednesday.  We enjoyed playing tennis after their flight and a lovely dinner at Longhorn their first night here.

Thursday, they were in Cincinnati the whole day, that is until 6:00 pm and then rushed home so Mark could see Robert play in the Mustang Classic Soccer Tournament.  It was exciting for Bic and Alex to see Robert play.

Friday they played more and more tennis!  They love it!  Mark somehow sprained his ankle but he continued to play.  During their "rest" time, Mark taught them how to play 5 CROWNS.  Friday night we treated everyone to a Mexican dinner at Qdoba and dessert at 32 degrees!  After dinner the boys played basketball for over an hour!  What great times together again!

What a fun visit!

2nd Game vs Manual

The second game of the mustang classic was at North at 8:00 pm.  All the guys think they are going to lose.  I wish they understood the concept of a positive attitude.

Robert starts on the outside left wing.  He is hardly ever passed the ball.  It's as if they are playing 10 v 11.  He takes a few runs on goal but doesn't even get a shot off.  He played 25 minutes and then subbed out.  The half ends 0-0.

NOHS Boys 1st Soccer Game vs Fern Creek - VICTORY!!!

It's that time of year again for FALL SOCCER!!!  I'm so excited and a bit nervous for this season.  Robert will be playing VARSITY ONLY!  The Varsity team is comprised of 2 seniors, a bunch of Juniors and the rest are sophomores with one or two freshman... yikes ... we are young!

The beginning of each season the NOHS soccer teams host the Mustang Classic.  Our first game is Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 8:00 pm on the North field!  (Last year our fields were destroyed so we had to host the tournament at Collins).  It was so nice to have it at NORTH.

Robert started on the wing.  It was so fun to hear his name be announced.  #20 Robert Lowe!!!

The game was very exciting - the ball went back and forth, but the other team just didn't have a good shot, whereas we did.  Our first goal was off a FREE KICK.  Matthew Morris took the kick with his left foot and hit the top right corner - beautiful shot.   1-0

Our second goal was off a long play where we passed the ball around a lot, then Grey Kinnison took a shot, but the goalie blocked it, but didn't catch it so Robert ran up on the ball and booted it in with his left foot!!!  2-0

Our third goal was a very quick goal.  Kaleb Patterson passed the ball to Keyon while Robert was making a run.  Keyon passed it long and Robert ran up on it with no hesitation.  Goalie and Robert both went for the ball, it popped up and Grey Kinnison followed it with a shot into the goal!!!  3-0

At half time we were 3-0.

Robert started the second half.  We didn't score but we had a few opportunities.  The coach subbed the starters out a little faster (considering we have a 3-0 lead) but then we got scored on 3-1 ... 10 minutes later 3-2.  YIKES!!!

Luckily the game ended.  3-2.  WE WON!!!
