Last Halloween in Louisville; First Halloween for Cayson

For Halloween Betsy got to wear the beautiful gown she made for Jennifer Fisher's play (SOHS).  She wanted it to look like Mary Poppins but she didn't have time to finish the red waist band (so this day Mary Poppins has a pink waistband).

Betsy passed out candy at the house for the last time in Louisville.  It was sad realizing it was the last time.

This is also Cayson's first HALLOWEEN

Week 20: Open House and Dedication of New Chapel

Week 20

Hey everyone!! สวัสดีครับทุกคน

This week has definitely been a faith boosting week as I have seen the Lord's hand in so many ways. The church in Phuket is officially open and my goal this week was to get as many people into that church as I could. We printed over 400 fliers to pass out and passed out probably 250 of them! We literally talked with EVERYONE even little kids!

I saw multiple miracles this week! We had way more people at English only 1 person was a member!! I was so excited and we got 2 more investigators from it!

To start, on Saturday we had the open house for the new church building! On the night of the open house I stood outside the church with my comp and we just waved and wrote on the whiteboard that we have a party tonight. Honestly it was pretty effective and we got like 10 people into the church! We got probably 5 new people for English class and 3 new investigators! God has prepared his sheep here and has opened so many people's hearts.

On Saturday night the mission president rolled into town with his family. It was such a wonderful experience to have the mission president come to my area and spread his love. Sunday we had the dedication of the building and we sang "The Spirit of God" with so much power. The spirit was so strong I can't even describe it. It touched my heart and I even started to tear up which I never do.

I am so grateful for this new building as it has already been a huge blessing to this area. All the problems that seemed to be impossible to solve have vanished because of this building. We had 4 investigators at church which is 4 times as much as we had had in the first 4 weeks!

On Sunday I got to teach with the mission president and his family.
It was such a powerful lesson and once in a lifetime experience. My comp kept telling me how cool it was that we just taught a lesson with the mission president! We sang a couple of hymns and it was really something else.

Lastly, one of the members from Bangkok called my trainer and he couldn't understand anything. So she called me and asked if my trainer was a greenie and if I was the trainer. It was so funny and I really feel like the language is just rolling at this point. I have reviewed so much grammar and I feel like I can speak way easier and faster! My companion told me I am starting to sound more Thai when I speak which is the greatest compliment he could have given me. I also talk probably more than my trainer in lessons and talk more in when we invite! The gift of tongues is so real. This language that seemed impossible to learn at first, has recently began to click along with my understanding! The Lord truly loves all his children and wants us to be successful.

I love you all and I want everyone to know how much God truly cares for each of us individually! He understands our concerns and our problems, but if we trust in him he will ease our burdens!

week 19: First Sunday in New Building

Week 19

Such a great week filled with many blessings and miracles from God. I am constantly reminded of God's goodness and the importance of counting our blessings when disappointment comes around. I don't want to write too much about this week so I will keep this relatively short.

To start, there is the huge festival that has been going on all week in Phuket where they don't eat meats, walk the streets all day, throw fireworks at each other, and lastly put swords and other things through their mouths. It is honestly the grossest thing ever but also insanely cool :)

Well the church is all finished and let me just say it is the biggest blessing!

With the new building, we planned on starting up a lot of new activities for the branch. English class began about 2 weeks ago, but we planned on creating a scripture class on Thursday nights and a sports night on Saturday nights. I had been inviting people all of this week to come to these activities and I couldn't wait to see the result. I was so excited for these activities, however we ended up having 1 person come to English, 3 people at the scripture class, and no one showed up to sports night. I sat there waiting and waiting for people to come, watching the minutes pass by, and gradually my hope turned to discouragement. I decided to say a prayer and immediately I began to remember all the blessings that I have already been given. I felt comforted that the Lord truly knows how I was feeling and that He was with me.
We are having a big party this next week that we have planned a lot for it this week. It will be an open house for the new building and our mission president is coming for those 2 days. I believe this branch is just on the verge of sprouting  and will continue to grow immensely in the next couple of weeks!

This week my trainer wanted to give me the opportunity to plan and act as a "trainer" for 2 of the days. So on Wednesday and Saturday I was the one  in charge of calling everyone, setting up appointments, traveling to places, leading all the lessons, and so on. It was a little exhausting but worth the experience. On Wednesday I invited หนึ่ง to be baptized and then on Saturday we invited แนน and her sister พิมพ์ to be baptized as well...and they all accepted a date. I am so excited for these people and their desire to become a member of Christ's church. The work had been slow at first, but I believe the Lord is finally rewarding us for our diligence and hard work.

This Sunday was AWESOME! First, it was the first Sunday at the new building. The spirit was so strong and I could definitely feel a difference between this actual building and a hotel room. Second, we got to hear the living prophet and apostles speak to us. They are truly called of God and lead and guide us in these latter days. The translation in Thai comes a week later, but I didn't mind because we got the opportunity to watch conference with the incredible members. Third, we had some investigators at church this Sunday. It was almost impossible to get people to church at the hotel, but what a blessing it is that we have a church here. I am so excited for next week because it will be the first time we have an actual church meeting in the new building!

Other miracles and things I am grateful for:

-Coincidentally we found one of our investigators at work and gave him the Book of Mormon. He has been reading everyday and asking a lot of questions

-Almost got wrecked by a car, but I'm still alive

-This world and this island I am living on

-The Thai people put swords and poles through their cheeks and dont bleed, scar, or feel any pain

-My family and friends

Talk on Individual Worth and Recognizing God's Hand in your life

Once upon a time … long long long long … ago, everyone that is in this room (and I can say this with assurance) was living peacefully in the pre-existence.  There we knew who we were.  There we chose to follow the plan of salvation -        accept the challenges we would face, but with steadfast faith and devotion to Heavenly Father’s plan.  He knew we would need help for when we fell short or forgot who we were.  Jesus Christ, our brother steps in and says he will be our Savior.  HE Loves us so much that he is willing to take upon himself our sins, sadnesses, aches, pains, sorrows, and misunderstandings.  WHY?  because we are Heavenly Fathers’ children and HE believes in us - He Loves us.  Just the thought of that is sometimes too much for me to bear, but it is what gives each of us hope, direction, purpose in life.

JESUS wants each and every one of us to know that we were worth it - that we are of infinite worth.  In Moses 1:37, 39 we read:  And the Lord God spake unto Moses, saying: The heavens, they are many, and they cannot be numbered unto man; but they are numbered unto me, for they are mine. (all his creations)
39 For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.
When I read this I understand that Heavenly Father is explaining his joy of all of his creations, and his hope and desire that all of his creations shall come to have immortality and eternal life.

Back in 1989, I read the following quote, “we are not human beings having a spiritual experience but rather, we are spiritual beings having a human experience.
It has stayed with me ever since - not that I remember it all the time - as I should.  Non-the-less, We are first and foremost a Spirit CHILD OF GOD.  For this reason one of the first principles taught and first songs ever learned is “I am a Child of God.”  You are a Child of God.  This will never change - no matter what you do, what you say, what commandments you keep or break.  GOD LOVES YOU - YOU ARE HIS CHILD.  You are AWESOME!!!
Just this week, Mark showed me a video he received from a friend, it repeated “You are awesome” - something like 20 times - “don’t listen to anyone tell you otherwise.”  Although this is not our prophet, or leaders or bishopric - it’s still true - YOU ARE AWESOME - actually even more than awesome.

As a parent of children that I have loved and nurtured for years and years, I can tell you it is hard to let something you love so much go so far away, but this is what our Heavenly Father did.  God loved you so much to allow us to come here.  And just as every parent of children that are away from home feels, we wish they would remember us more.  So for us, The trick is … we need to remember HIM that we do not lose our way.

Disney creators demonstrate this in Lion King when Simba leaves his homeland out of fear for a sad circumstance that happened.  He turned his back on everything he knew and was lured away by other, beautiful and fun distractions.  But then, he was reminded of his past when he sees Nala.  Confused by seeing her again, he goes off to  seeks counsel - which is symbolic of a prayer.  The counsel he received was “You have forgot me … and in such, you have forgot who you are.  Upon his remembrance, Simba recognizes all the blessings of his past, which motivates him .…  I won’t spoil the end if you haven’t seen it … however it is a good representation to us - our HEAVENLY FATHER wants us to REMEMBER HIM - and to recognize HIM in our live.

As a side note - did you know the word “REMEMBER” is mentioned in the scriptures more than 745 times?”

NOW … I know some people might be thinking - he only loves those that obey.  But that is not true.  In Doctrine and Covenants 138:7  we read:
“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
Nephi also bears testimony of God’s love in 1 Nephi 11:17 And I said unto him: I know that he loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things.
Nephi wants  us know that even though he doesn’t know or understand all the things he is trying to learn, he knows that God loveth his children.

God loves us so much that he gave us a Savior, to atone for us - to suffer our sins, to take our pains, to heal our sorrows and to comfort those that mourn.   As members we partake of the sacrament.  In the Sacrament prayer, He promises us so many blessings if we will REMEMBER him.  It is a chance for us to reflect  and recognize his hand in our lives and follow him and keep his commandments.

In the busy-ness of our daily lives, have we forgotten who we REALLY are… a*** son or daughter or the most HIGH GOD.  I know I have from time to time.  I know I have not felt the glow of happiness I feel when I remember who I am and how much I am loved despite my weaknesses and shortcomings.

Just as Simba demonstrates, we will be constantly challenged by the adversary. Satan wants us to forget who we really are.  He fills the world with noise and distractions.

I want to share a different correlation to this concept through the HARRY POTTER Goblet of Fire.  In this book Harry is faced with a challenge of opening a golden egg to hear important information - something that will save his life.  When Harry opens the egg (in air), though, it merely shrieks loudly.  However, Harry receives a tip telling him to take the to the prefects' bathroom.  Although confused, Harry takes the egg to there, where he listens to the egg underwater; alas the words are peaceful and understandable.

Image result for golden egg in harry potterVisualize the beautiful golden egg.  Opening the egg in the air, is likened to listening and following what the world wants us to comprehend and learn - if we seek guidance and approval from this world,
concern ourselves with money or material things,
worldly praise,
FB likes, Instagram hearts , Twitter and other social media,
if we judge ourselves by world standards - all we will hear is noise and confusion.
We will not be able to understand the true message that we are to receive from our Heavenly Father.  BUT

Opening the egg in water - the “Living Water”  we will open the egg to be filled the what our Heavenly Fathers wants us to comprehend and learn - if we seek guidance and approval from Him,
pray,
read our scriptures,
attend church and activities,
listen to our prophet and other leaders and recognize His hand in our lives,
if we allow Christ to be the judge and be free of worldly standards but live by his standards - then we will hear the sweet, peaceful and understandable message HE has for us.

As we recognize Gods hand in our lives - even in hardship and challenging time, even in moments of sadness or grief - as we recognize we are not alone we can overcome each hardship, challenge and even PAIN, BECAUSE WE WILL REALIZE JESUS CHRIST TOOK THOSE pains, sufferings and challenges for us, if we will give them to him.

Don't focus on the thorns, but on your beautiful flower

As I looked for God’s influence on my heart, as I recognized him in my life - he was the one I want to please, and thus I don’t need to worry about anyone else, or what the world thought.
I no longer needed to nor wanted  to listen to the shrieks of the egg.  Instead, I need to listen to the still small voice of the Holy Ghost, to my leaders, to my scriptures, and to the answers of my prayers because those are counsel from my Heavenly Father.

Speaking of prayers - be careful what you pray for -
As many of you may know we are moving to Memphis.  I was so sad to leave.  We love our ward, our schools, the kids teams, we’ve been here 16 years, but 16 years ago, after moving every three years we asked the Lord to let us stay here at least until our last child graduated high school.  It took 16 years to answer that prayer but he did.  How can I not be grateful for his love and attention to our heartfelt desire.

In Closing I would like to share one more scripture:  2 Nephi 10:20,23-24
20 And now, my beloved brethren, seeing that our merciful God has given us so great knowledge concerning these things, let us remember him, and lay aside our sins, and not hang down our heads, for we are not cast off; nevertheless, we have been driven out of the land of our inheritance; but we have been led to a better land, for the Lord has made the sea our path, and we are upon an isle of the sea.

I am so grateful for the knowledge that I am a daughter of God.  I am so grateful to be surrounded by such wonderful brothers and sisters in the gospel.  I also believe each of you are loved by your Heavenly Father.  I’m glad that I live in this beautiful world, Heavenly Father created for me - come sun or rain.  I believe we have a living Prophet and apostles to give us directions on our eternal path home.  I believe in the Book of Mormon.  I know it is the word of God.  I am so grateful to be married in the temple to by wonderful husband.  I recognize the many blessings in my life.  I am also grateful for this opportunity to help open my heart and feel my Saviors love more deeply.

I say …

Trip to Utah for Sierra's Bridal Shower and play with Cayson

Betsy flew out Friday to spend time with Devon, Sierra, Jessica, Tate and Cayson.  The real reason she flew out to Utah was to be at Sierra's bridal shower.  They worked hard to make it so I could be there, so I took advantage of it and went.  I arrived Friday and brought Jessica and Tate Chick-fil-A for lunch, before leaving to have lunch with Sierra at 1:30 PM.  I picked her up at her work and we went for New York Style pizza.  I had a nice time getting to know her better and learn more about her wedding plans.  I stayed at the Marriott Provo Center.  They have renovated it - it's lovely.  I spent the afternoon with Jessica and Cayson.  Oh how I love holding my sweet grandson, and spending time with Jessica.

Friday for dinner we went to Olive Garden to take advantage of their Bottomless Plates.

My special buddy

Saturday morning, I met up with Jessica, Tate and Cayson and Tate's sister and Spencer and their kids at the BYU Homecoming parade.  IT is a Murphey tradition so I was excited to be there.  Unfortunately, Jessica and I had to leave at 10:40 (just as the parade was really starting) to go to Sierra's bridal shower.  For the parade, BYU offers free Blue frosted donuts and hot chocolate to it's spectators - yum yum.

YUM YUM

The shower started at 11:00 AM at her parent's house.

Beautiful decorations
After the shower I went back to the hotel and worked out, read and wrote letters.  Jessica and Tate also took a nap when Cayson fell asleep.  Around 5:00 PM we went to JACKER'S pumpkin patch together.  It was soooo much fun.

Jessica and I loved petting the animals in the petting zoo.

Even though Cayson was starting to come down with something - he is still adorable!!!

At 8:00 PM we all met together at Jessica and Tate's to watch the BYU game!!!

Sunday we had a wonderful day - I went to church with Devon and Sierra.  Jessica and Tate had to stay home because Tate and Cayson came down sick.

I flew home on Monday morning.  I'm looking forward to returning for Devon's wedding.  I had wished to have more time with Devon and Sierra.  They really didn't spend any time with me other than going to church.  I had hoped to have some special time with them ... but they were just too busy with other things.
